Dog Proof Sofas

Help needed! Sofa needs replacing and need something that is durable and dog proof Grin, if that indeed does exist? I have a lab and a spaniel who live on the sofa and whilst I have no intentions of trying to stop them doing this, would like to get something as durable and inexpensive as possible.

So lovely dog-folk, what are the best materials, colour and strategy for mixing dogs and furniture?

Should also mention there are a few cats who live here too!

I have a leather sofa from Next, it's ex display so has already a few marks. (Or I would have flipped if DDogs / DC marked the brand new sofa Grin.)
I also have an extra large throw that I can wash regularly and is cheaper to replace.

I have had chairs with this Designers Guild Fabric - washable - www.designersguild.com/uk/fabric/designers-guild-essentials/mezzola-alta-fabrics/c432 however I think is was derived from some car seat fabric ( I think Alcantara ) and can be bought cheaper in its generic form - however I would agree with @Ylvamoon - some inexpensive throws will keep sofas better for a long time.

Personally I would not do leather but that is a personal choice - I would do Sofas with washable covers and then throws

But our dogs are on the sofas - we do throws

All best to you @ItsTheKissing

I have Loaf sofas in “clever velvet”. They have withstood puppy wee (literally the day they were delivered!), dog sick, blood plus numerous human spillages (of the beverage kind rather than bodily fluids 😂). The liquid just sits on top of the fabric and doesn’t deep in.

Cat hasn’t scratched them either, I’m guessing it’s not the kind of fabric to encourage that.

Plus 4 years on and they still look lovely.

Goawayangryman · 07/01/2022 18:42

I also have loaf sofas. I don't rate them generally for longevity, but blimey they are dog-proof as far as the fabric goes.

Thanks everyone. We've had a look at all your suggestions and been to a couple of shops too; Loaf seems to be the better option - more than we wanted to pay but probably false economy to buy as cheap as possible. We'll get some throws too! Just need to decide on colour; mud vs white dog hair Grin

Don't forget the Rub Test (patent pending Grin)

Order a load of swatches of material - then go around 'rubbing' each one on your dog to see how much the fur sticks and how visible it is. There is a huge variety and it's not always what you think.

This is how we chose our last sofa materials and you literally cannot see the dog fur on them!

bingohandjob · 11/01/2022 21:05

We opted for a brown leather second hand one that the dog is allowed on and our other cream fabric one is strictly dog free!

Girlintheframe · 12/01/2022 06:59

I've always had leather sofas and both have stood up well to both our dogs.
Though to be fair I like the 'worn in' look and bought accordingly so wasn't fussed about scratches.

ItsTheKissing · 12/01/2022 14:46

Swatches on order for rub test!

For those of your with Loaf sofas, are they comfortable or do they just flatten as soon as you sit on them?

I've looked at Snug as they appear to be bomb proof but some dodgy reviews about cushions sliding off has put me off.

Good ole DFS have some good ones too...... I just don't know!!

@Girlintheframe I like the 'worn in' look with leather sofas but wonder how comfortable they are for snuggling in and watching a movie?

IKEA leather sofa over 15yrs old an amazed at how it stood up to life! Including adding a sofa surfing springer...fabric sofa had throw but dog just kept dragging them off so that will just get recovered eventually and I put throw on for guests!

Ours is really comfy. We got it DFS about 6 years ago and it's still going well. It's similar to this one https://m.dfs.co.uk/thor/hto16egad?gclid=CjwKCAiAlfqOBhAeEiwAYi43F5YmMSGDVCRR9xWzuQS-bElDdrELcagtaq0ocSo1x1UytZRY3w0RoCY4oQAvDDBwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

If fact when we got it we were warned against it as it was untreated (can't remember the word but basically bad for stains if spillage etc) but we've had absolutely no problems with it despite dogs, cats and kids on it. It is definitely the lived in natural look though which isint for everyone.

ItsTheKissing · 13/01/2022 07:58

@Girlintheframe That is a nice sofa Smile
I may go and 'loaf' on some leather ones at the weekend!

Following with interest as will be in the same situation soon!

Scattyhattie · 13/01/2022 08:23

I just use throws at moment but can buy covers which may help keeping new sofa nicer for longer and whip off when have visitors for a less hairy seat.

Think we've decided on the Loaf Slowcoach in deep velvet .....
