Mini Schnauzers, border terrier or wire haired fox terriers?

My Mother is looking for a small(ish) companion dog. She particularly likes these breeds. She'd like a dog that's happy to go out with her on walks or just a stroll around town. She's a very experienced dog owner.

If you have experience of any of those dogs, I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts. TIA

I love terriers so I'd be happy with any of those breeds.
•Local dog trainer lady has a smooth haired fox terrier who is immaculately trained, but is VERY bouncy. Not a problem as long as you can put good training in place.
•All the vets round here have border terriers, so that seems like it might be a good sign. Are they healthier than other breeds or is it a weird veterinarian cult?
•Miniature schnauzers have a reputation for being barky and grumpy, but I have 2 living very close to me - neither are barky, but they're both a bit picky about which other dogs they like.
If you want to add other terrier breeds into the mix, then I have a lovely cairn/Norfolk cross. Cairn puppies look very sweet with their huge ears and the Norfolks are particularly sweet looking dogs.
I'm no expert but I think it's best to find a great breeder who has dogs with the right temperament for your mum's situation - once you've decided on a terrier the personality of the dog is much more important than the breed.
Happy puppy researching!

I love my border. My vet loves my border. My mates love my border.

Ohhhh love a schnauzer! Gorgeous dogs, don't shed much, lovely temperaments!

We have a mini schnauzer and he's the best .
Not at all barky, doesn't shed, doesn't smell unless wet and has the most wonderful personality.
He's affectionate but not too needy.
I love him Grin

Border terriers are the best - our vets love ours! Everyone loves her she has a very positive outlook on life!

The only fox terrier I know has boundless energy, she's a lovely dog but can do a 10 mile run and still want to play!!

Miniature schnauzers are nice dogs but can be barky.

Border terriers are good dogs but can be stubborn (bit like most terriers!)

What about a companion breed?

We have a border terrier, my dad has a border, our vet has a border and thinks ours is lovely. Three of our past vets had borders, Noel Fitzpatrick had his border Keira who sadly died recently.

Border Terriers are lovely - some can be a bit reactive and barky but most don't seem to be. There are 3 in our tiny village alone, only one of them is a bit grumpy with other dogs (all depends on early experience I suppose). We had a neighbour in the past who had 2 and one of them was very reactive, but apparently that only started when they got their 2nd - she was fine before that. Ours is just such a lovely sweet silly dog, he has some digestive issues but any dog can get those. My dad's border is soft and licky and lovable, she's fine with other dogs just likes her space as many terriers do.

Ours is as happy with a 2-3 hour hike as a run on the beach or in the woods, and equally satisfied with a 20 minute walk around the village if the weather is foul (borders can be lazy and not keen on the rain, I think mine got that memo as a pup).

Prior to him we had a Patterdale terrier, and she was FERAL. Never again, border all the way!

Oh one thing a vet said to us about BTs which appears to be somewhat true - if you leave your mouth open too long a BT will be in there cleaning your teeth for you. Fact. Grin

We have a border terrier, she’s almost one. Borders are generally a lovely breed, intelligent, energetic but not as lovely as say a spaniel. Banditdog cracked toilet training pretty quickly. Loves a long walk and rarely tires but can make do with shorter walks if needed. She’s very affectionate. She is very friendly, not everyone loves that and we are still working on her not jumping up at people/other dogs and her recall (she was not in favour when she ran off yesterday and I had to chase her!).

I grew up with fox terriers - I absolutely love them but all of ours were pretty full on and very ‘terrier’ and hugely energetic. Very, very funny dogs though with heaps of personality, very loving to family and lots of fun. One male one particular was the best dog I’ve ever known. But quite hard work and often quite clever and quick.

I get a pang whenever I see one but would never actually own one as too hard work ( although that’s partly because of where I live and having kids - if it was just me and I was rural I might give in!)
