Spayed today - sad dog :-(

Our poor darling is looking very sorry for herself with her special post-op coat on :-( she’s been in her crate since she got home three hours ago and is looking very mournful. She has eaten a bit of special food from the vet but is refusing to come out for a cuddle and I feel so sad for her! Will she perk up a bit tomorrow?!

She's just had surgery, leave her alone, she doesn't want cuddles she wants peace and quiet!

RunningFromInsanity · 05/01/2022 20:50

As above, she’s woozy and sore, let her do what she wants.
It is hard to see them like this though.

userxx · 05/01/2022 20:56

Peace and quiet and she'll be fine a few days. I always feel like absolute shit after a general anaesthetic, I just want to sleep it off.

Chunkymenrock · 05/01/2022 20:56

She should have painkillers on board so is comfortable but the anaesthetic drugs will be making her feel rough. As pp said do not cuddle. Warmth, quiet and sleep is what she needs. Rest is vital. She will be feeling much better in the next 24 hours.

TheGoldenWolfFleece · 05/01/2022 20:57

Yeah she will be fine tomorrow. Mine was done a few weeks ago and i felt awful seeing her so subdued but she bounced right back.

aNewYorkerInLondon · 05/01/2022 21:11

Def give her any pain meds on the schedule the vet recommended. She'll feel better in no time. My dog was a bit woozy, out of it that day, but much better the next.

The first couple of days she wore the cone collar, but after that we got these cute little dog jumpsuits to keep her off her stitches, which worked like a charm.

I just keep quietly checking on her, she came out half an hour ago to drink some water and went straight back in. Hopefully she’ll feel a bit less shit in the morning! We’ve got painkillers from the vet ready for tomorrow morning and a check up booked for Saturday first thing. I’ll have DH on alert overnight so he can let her out if necessary as he’s off work tomorrow.

Awwww, her big girl jumpsuit. She's absolutely gorgeous.

She just rested her head on my hand as I moved her water bowl to refill it - she must be feeling so rubbish!

Mine cried pathetically all night after her spay... she was so disorientated and I slept on the floor next to her.
Next day... eating and drinking... day 3... begged for a walk. Day 4.. jumped a fence! (to be fair hers was laporoscopic)

They soon perk up, but the first night was pitiful!

SpringersLoveSofas · 06/01/2022 13:58

Oh the first night after an operation. The woozy, whimpering sadness of it :(

When my current dog was neutered, I dragged a mattress downstairs onto the living room floor and slept with him down there. Too heartbreaking to leave him and he was too woozy to walk upstairs and too tender to carry.

It took about 36-48 hours before he perked up. Then about 6 hours until he was TOO perky and wanting to go for walks etc Grin

aNewYorkerInLondon · 06/01/2022 14:27

@SpringersLoveSofas - for us the worst (far worse than the spay) was when we had to have SO many of our yorkie's baby teeth extracted because they hadn't fallen out quickly enough to make room for her grown up teeth. She hid under the sofa all night afterward and wouldn't come out. I too slept on the floor in the living room.

The evening after the spay she just wanted to lay in our bed and be gently petted, so that's what we did.

aNewYorkerInLondon · 06/01/2022 14:28

@Whattodo121, how's she doing today?

SpringersLoveSofas · 06/01/2022 14:30

Oh no @aNewYorkerInLondon! Poor little lamb - that would have broken my heart too. Young, small dog hiding behind the sofa.

QueenOfToast · 06/01/2022 17:20

Hope she's feeling a bit better today. My boy had his castration op on Tuesday and seems much more like himself today. He's getting more used to the horrible cone too. (Can't do the bodysuit thing for him because he had a floppy rear dew claw removed at the same time.)

@QueenOfToast Bless his little face!

WhiteXmas21 · 06/01/2022 19:43

It’s the anaesthesia that makes them miserable. Your vet will have ensured she’s not in pain. My girl just lay in her bed and my male dog kept her company, let her rest her head on him, whatever.
She was fine in a couple of days.

He’s a wonderful nurse as it happens 🥰

Whattodo121 · 06/01/2022 19:49

Aw thank you for all the lovely messages - she’s currently asleep on the sofa next to me on an extra soft cushion, under a lovely fluffy blanket! She’s been eating and drinking today but is still obviously very sore so a bit wobbly. She keeps eyeing up my bag of maltesers so she must be feeling better!

That is just adorable.

When our retriever was spayed it took about 10 days for her to be back to normal but I would go through it all again to know that I had done the right thing for her. Our other two (smaller) girls got over it much faster.
