Entertaining injured dog

My poor Ddog has injured his back leg a few days ago so is on strict rest and is hobbling around. We're only on day 3 and he's starting to get a bit fed up. (also very miffed we keep telling him he can't get on the sofa as normal, as don't want him to jump). I just wish I could make it better for him Sad

Please can anyone suggest anything for stimulation for him?

We would often play find the treats in the house which we obviously can't do at the moment. We have a treat puzzle we can use but looking for other ideas. Trying to avoid toys that involve much walking around so probably avoiding rolling treat balls

Could possibly use a kong but can't freeze it as the cold makes him sick

Make a cosy seat on the floor so you can sit with him.
When ddog had the cone of shame I let her sleep in our bed..
She chose a pillow.
Dh's.
My 6'4 dh slept on a 2 seater sofa for 2 nights!!.

I have been sitting on the floor with him which he's liked but tonight he kept wanting to get on the sofa and sulked off to his bed eventually when I kept saying no, and didn't want to sit on the floor with me

DH and I have been taking it in turns to sleep downstairs with him as he cant come upstairs at the moment. Normally he sleeps in our room and comes on the bed in the morning

In similar circumstances I split my dog's meals into three per day and used a lickimat to put the (wet) food on. It meant the meals lasted a llittle longer, were spread over the day and gave a bit of stimulation.

Natural treats and chews - things like cows hooves, pizzle sticks, braided ostrich etc.
Brain games - put treats in one hand and he has to sniff them out. Or put treats under cups on the floor, move the cups around and he has to find out which cups they're under etc.
Teach him the names of all his toys.
Feed all his meals out of snuffle mats and lick-mats or kongs so they last longer and make him think.

Personally I would (if he tolerates it) lift him up and allow him on the sofa, just put a short lead on him so he can't jump down. I would also still be allowing him to sleep upstairs if that's what he's used to - just carry him and shut doors etc. so he can't jump or move around too much.

Teach him the names of all his toys

That's so cute, @fairylightsandwaxmelts!

Some sort of Kong/substitute with treats and Philadelphia or peanut butter frozen inside might brighten his day.

When he goes out for a wee in the garden sprinkle his food into the grass. Using his nose to find it will wear him out hugely without him having to move too much.

Thatldo · 04/01/2022 08:55

Get him a lick mat.it keeps him happy for a while.I do feel for you(and your dog)it is a nightmare to keep a normally active dog not moving.

catsrus · 04/01/2022 09:02

Teach him to count. My dogs know what 5 is. Hold a toy just above his nose - count slowly and release on "five" - I also move the toy a little with each number. They begin to begin to anticipate the "drop" - and then you can change the gaps between, build up anticipation.

One of my dogs will play this endlessly, a second for a good while - the third looks at me like I'm an idiot 🤣

Thanks for all the suggestions. We will try some of them. I love the idea of teaching him to count!

We can't carry him and down stairs safely unfortunately. It's not worth the risk of dropping him. He's a 25kg lump! Grin

Well 25gk or not our ddog expects lifted downstairs!! And dh does it!! Started off as a dpuppy she didn't want to go downstairs to bed so dh carried her... So now she is conditioned to expect a lift. She rolls upside down if he tries to shove her off her upstairs bed! The others do as they are told but not her!!

FreakinFrankNFurter · 04/01/2022 23:16

It's a bit different as your dog is obviously used to being carried and likes it.
Ddog isn't used to being carried and doesn't like it when we have to pick him up. He wriggles a lot and that wouldn't be safe. I'm not going to risk another injury to him

We did have an airbed in the living room last night so ddog got on that for a cuddle this morning Smile
