How best to research breeders these days? Also, poodle, irish setter or spaniel?

Haven’t owned a dog in 10 years since my cocker died. Have owned 3 dogs in my lifetime and need tips on how best to research breeders and how long is it on wait lists these days?

Will be ready for another dog in 18 months or so, once DD leaves for university and empty nest syndrome kicks in.

Also can’t decide between standard poodle, cocker spaniel or Irish setter. Any experiences welcome. I’ve had a cocker and miniature poodle before.

Me and DH at home, mostly WFH but will need to use dog daycare or a sitter once a week. DD back for holidays by then. We have 2 middle aged, confident and friendly pedigree cats who go out. Their breeder had dogs so they were socialised. We have an enclosed medium sized garden and direct access to a large forest just over the road. Plus farmland also within a short stroll. We enjoy walking. Both fit and well.

Thanks for any guidance.

@NoTeaForMe show crickets tend to be much calmer than working. Ours will walk or run for miles but equally happy with a sniffy mooch around. Working cockers need exercise and stimulation more. Obviously there are exceptions though…

Hmm I’ve got a show cocker @NoTeaForMe and at nearly 11 he is still as bonkers as he was as a pup. Just sleeps for longer when he’s exhausted himself ‘helping’ me.

Absolutely daft as a brush, very loving but stubborn as the day is long, food obsessed and follows me everywhere. Selective recall and absolutely obsessed with following a scent - even if that means walking into parked cars, the bin, a big hole in the ground etc.

We don’t talk about the vets bills nor the cost of grooming. Love him to bits though.

Spend a day at a dog show, see which breed appeals to you the most. Watch the owners, watch the dogs. Some of the dogs will be completely chilled, and others might be hyper or snarling at everything that passes. Be prepared to wait for the right puppy.
