Awful awful evening wind

Ddog is a lurcher and has always been prone to a sensitive tum. In the past few months he has developed horrific evening wind.
We’ve always stuck to a fish based grain free diet and he used to eat Millie’s Wolfheart utility mix but got fussy and stopped eating it. We’ve tried a few different brands and despite there being a couple that haven’t given him a bad tum he just won’t eat them.
He’s now on Canagan (60% salmon) we use wet and dry food and he loves it. We had no wind for a while when we switched to this but now it’s back with a vengeance! The entire downstairs literally smells foul this evening and I’m fielding complaints from all the non furry residents.
Any suggestions as I’m at a bit of a loss.

Probably the dog food, or could he have eaten something else?
My Lab has IBS there’s isn’t much he can eat without having wind, as long as his poop is ok I don’t tend to worry too much, but he can clear a room at times! Blush

This was one of the reasons we moved to Millie's and the wind stopped. Thankfully our dog seems to enjoy it. Could his current food be too rich? Ours eats fish only too which limits things quite a bit but could you try other brands?

SmolCat · 03/01/2022 08:54

I’ve found feeding raw stops this problem. But I don’t know whether that’s an option for you. I really would recommend it though.

Ilikewinter · 03/01/2022 08:57

Does he eat any treats during the day?. I can tell if weve given him any new or different treats.
We had the same with winterpup and through the power of google (!) Ive realised he just cant stomache chicken and ive discovered A LOT of dog food includes chicken.

RedPandaWanda · 03/01/2022 09:03

My dog has a super sensitive tum too and if we don’t watch his diet he does the most vile silent but deadlies. Wet food is a definite no-no for him and chicken too.
I have awful IBS and have been told many times to avoid Fructooligosaccharides (FOS). Healthy for many but it ferments in the gut so not great for those (furry or otherwise) with sensitive tums. I see your dogs food has that in it, maybe it’s that?

MoiraNotRuby · 03/01/2022 09:06

My dog only has wind when someone has given him a treat, so I don't know if this will help, but my solution is always to take him for an extra or differently timed walk to help his digestion. Basically one of the DC gets the job of walking him round the estate until he has a poo.

WhatTheWhoTheWhatThe · 03/01/2022 09:20

I’ve stopped giving treats in the day and that hasn’t really helped. Also it may be that his waking pattern is now different. He loves a really long run out in the field in the morning but refuses point blank to go out again in the evening in winter when it’s dark. Maybe I need to try him in the afternoon when it’s still light although he refuses to go in the afternoon at day care too 🙄
RedPandaWanda I will look again at his food though it’s a pain with him being so fussy!

I might also drop the wet food for a few days and just give him dry see if that helps although he tends to have the wet in the morning and the dry at night. I would have thought if it was the wet he’d be gassy during the day?

Has the recipe changed in his current food? Manufacturers often change recipes without really saying anything so it could be that they've added an ingredient that doesn't agree with him.

Could it be that he's eating too quickly? That can cause wind and upset stomachs - you could try a slow feeding bowl or feeding him his kibble out of a snuffle mat or kong wobbler instead.

You know without a pic how can we be sure you even have a gorgeous Lurcher op?

I’m not sure if it has changed but I will check. He used to be a dreadfully fast eater as a pup and for a long time he only had food in a long or long wobble. He’s much better now though but might be with slowing him down a bit more

Hmm tempting but I do adore the windy bugger 🤣 I am hankering for a couple of smooth coated long hounds though and I’ll definitely take your gorgeous pair off your hands!!

Have you tried Acana Pacifica? Very good for sensitive tums, you dont need alot, and nutrition is high. No wind or large amounts of poo either.

QueenofLouisiana · 03/01/2022 13:52

We use Wellbeloved grain free dry and Lily’s Kitchen or Butchers cans for our greyhound. Limited treats or things like rabbit ears (furry) or dried sprats work well for his tummy.

This has eliminated the smelliest emissions but it’s not perfect. Poo, however, is much much better! These houndies seem susceptible to sensitive tummies.

Picture, just because he’s beautiful. Grin
