Dog incredibly anxious since operation?

It is long so bear with me!My lovely big dog is 11, and previously was the most laid back chilled animal. Very calm, happy to be left, good natured.
In September he had a scan which revealed a number of masses in his abdomen, and exploratory surgery to biopsy and examine them. All results came back clear thankfully but his sutures failed and he developed an infection so he had to have the whole operation redone to redo all the stitches. It was a stressful time with many out of hours vets visits, obviously he was in pain and felt very unwell.
His wound has since healed and he had also started on thyroid medication which means physically he looks like a much healthier dog. However he is incredibly anxious, cannot bear to not be in the room with me( not so worried about DH) doesn’t sleep at night and barks a lot if left.
He also licks and scratches obsessively which has given him some hot spots that have become infected. Does anyone have any experience of this and anything we might do to calm him down? He still has to go to the vets to get his thyroid medication and check on his various skin infections so he doesn’t really get a break from there.

I would think it’s something to do with the medication and check with your vet. My Lab had steroids and acted a bit odd, the vet told me that he would feel different whilst on the medication but he wouldn’t know /understand why he felt that way.
Or, could he be in pain? Dogs act differently to us.

I hope your dog feels better soon.

As PP check with your vets for any side effects of medication first.

But my dog has been in and out the vets so many times that yes it has had a permanent change to his behaviour in so many ways. He is still terrified of old fashioned phones since his last admission and has developed fear of other things as well. Every time he comes back from the vets where we have had to leave him he seems to develop another fear and is a very sensitive dog that we have now decided that we won't put him through anything major moving forwards as it just isn't fair on him.

So I am afraid I don't have any ideas how to help but just wanted to say it's awful to see them so anxious.

It may be a side effect of thyroid meds but could also be senile cognitive decline (common in dogs over 8)
Medication such as selgian can help reduce anxiety signs

I’m thinking doggie dementia.
