Muddy pup

I've posted about this before I did buy one of those paw cleaning cups. But it's not much good. Has anybody any tips on how to de-muddy a puppy after a walk. She hates being sprayed with the hose. I'm at my wits end trying to keep the floor and sofas clean.

If she's small enough to pick up, could you carry her into the bathroom? She might tolerate a luke-warm bath or shower better than the hose.

We use one of the micro fibre paw mitts and it seems to do the trick. But we have a short haired dog so his feet don't pick as much up as some of our neighbours longer haired dogs

Sleepytimebear · 30/12/2021 17:32

Mud daddy with warm water is good. Also lots of gentle tones, treats and a fun rub down with a towel after should help with the ordeal!

hopeishere · 30/12/2021 17:46

I don't what to have to bath her every day! Some neighbours got a hot water tap installed outside.

We are getting her clipped and that will hopefully help too!

Spraying her with a hose is not nice (unless it is a game on a summer's day), how would you like it?
Can't you carry her to a sink / bath / shower (wrapped in a towel of course), that is what we do with our muddy hound? Old towel is left by the door ready & waiting to pick him up with and a clean one is left near the sink to dry him off. Always done this.

An alternative (but less clean) is a doggy robe. You pop your wet / dirty dog in the robe, give them a good rub and they come out (fairly) dry & clean. Robe is microfibre so washes & drys easily.

AwkwardPaws27 · 30/12/2021 18:01

Microfiber towel is brilliant. He wears an equafleece on v muddy/wet walks so it's just the paws that need doing, and we find the microfiber towel gets everything transferable off.

Thatldo · 30/12/2021 18:12

It might be worth getting a clipper so you can keep the hair always short around her paws.

BiteyShark · 30/12/2021 18:15

We have our dog clipped fairly short and he gets his legs and belly hoses down in the bath after each walk then dried with a microfibre towel.

But he does fling himself into every muddy puddle he finds on a walk.

MrsOosh77 · 30/12/2021 18:23

Mud Daddy with a microfibre towelling robe for afterwards to dry/catch any bits from his undercarriage that you might have missed!

Caved and bought one this time last year when the world and his wife were out walking as everything else was closed- coupled with the wet weather it made for very churned up muddy walks and the car/ floors were suffering for it. We have a pointer sized dog and a 5 litre mud daddy is just right. On very cold days we wrap the mud daddy in a towel so the water stays warmer for longer. It’s been a game changer and as the water comes out of a brush it’s gentler than a hose and you can brush out the muddy knots.

icedcoffees · 30/12/2021 19:18

You need a drying coat.

Fill a bowl with hot water and leave it by the door with a micro-fibre cloth and a towel before your walk - by the time you're home the water will be warm but not cold.

Pop the dog in his drying coat after his walk and then use the cloth and water to get the mud off his legs and paws. Dry with the towel, then let the dog come in the house and dry off in the coat.

We put one on our beagle and he's dry within half an hour.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 30/12/2021 19:28

I’ve just ordered a ruff and tumble drying towel coat thing. It arrives tomorrow and I have high hopes.

BoodleBug51 · 30/12/2021 19:32

We've got 2 spaniels who come home from every walk in a right state. We've got a utility room sink and put a shower tap on it so that we can rinse them in warm water (eldest has arthritis) then they have a drying fleece coat on (Ruffwear with zips to take on and off).

We had some plumbing work done recently, and the plumber suggested taking the hot water pipe outside so we could put a shower attachment under our kitchen window on the patio. We plan to do it this summer.

GuyFawkesDay · 30/12/2021 19:36

Ruff and tumble drying coats are magic, you won't be disappointed!

I'm afraid as mine loves a cold stinking ditch on our walks he gets a cold hosepipe rinse on our return. However, he does get towelled off afterwards and if he's really grim, stuck into the bath for a proper wash.

Purchasing a hoselock portable shower too, as I think when we bought him we confused a canine with a hippo 🙄

fruitpastille · 30/12/2021 19:36

We just have an old towel by the door. Wrap dog, carry up the stairs and wash in the bath with shower hose. Use the shower to wash all the dirt away. Quick towel dry. It only takes a couple of minutes but we have a small dog. It is most days at the moment as it's so wet.

CatsForLife · 30/12/2021 19:45

Watering can filled with warm water and a bit of dog shampoo. Clean off, then dry at the door and in to lie on towels.

QueenOfToast · 30/12/2021 20:45

It's very muddy on nearly all the dog walks near me between October and April so I had an outside warm water tap installed. It's been the best thing ever, used nearly every day and worth every penny.

Do you just use a regular hose on that?

Will give the watering can a try!

My advice , and I have a terrier that likes to wallow like a hippo , is clip them short , equafleece jumper or suit for walks , then out of suit and into a drying bag when home . We have the Original Doggy Bag and our dog loves it , before I unzip him I give him a rub with the bag IYSWIM and he comes out dry and practically clean just requiring a little brush off in some places . It’s so much easier to wash and dry a coat and harness than washing the entire dog everyday ( x2) .

Hairyfriend · 31/12/2021 01:08

I fill the sink with 3cm of water and wash her feet in there. Unless she is covered in mud, its only a quick foot wash taking seconds. A bowl would do the job if a larger dog. Ours is 3.5kg, so still manageable to pick up.

StealingYourWiFi · 31/12/2021 01:11

Equafleece for very muddy walks then just shower her feet when we get home. We have an outside hot tap. Then she has a Ruff and Tumble drying gown.

friedeggandsauce · 31/12/2021 01:12

I agree with the muddaddy, we thought it was pricey but it's been so good!

kitkat6 · 31/12/2021 01:57

Equafleece summer suit has been a game changer for us

QueenOfToast · 31/12/2021 08:23

Yes, regular hose is fine.

Catsrus · 31/12/2021 14:16

Hose for the very biddable and compliant golden retriever. Bucket of warm water with a microfibre cloth for the little dogs. Before I moved here I had to drive to get to a decent dog walk, so I had a hozelock portable shower in the back of the car. Filled it with hot water before I left the house so it was just nicely warm when we got back to the car after the walk. Hose them off using that, then into the back of the car with fleece and towels.
