How to stop neighbour’s dog doing its business at oyrs

We live in an area where there are no walls/fences. Up to now we have frequent visits from neighbours dogs with no problems and we are dog friendly so we like the little visits (got to love the optimism of dogs who pass every single day hopeful for a snack and only get offered some water and an ear scratch!). But we have a new neighbour and their dog does its business on our property every bloody day.
What can we do? What can we expect that they could do if we raise this?
Thanks for your advice wise dog people.

Are you saying they just let their dog out to wander around and do it’s business anywhere?
Are you not in the U.K.?

What you can expect them to do is accompany their dog on walks, walk it on a lead and, if it does poop, to pick up after their dog!

Do you mean they allow it on your property and it poos, or does it wee when it's on a walk?

Suretobe · 28/12/2021 10:52

Like many of the dogs here (not U.K.) it is free to wander around.

If dogs are free to just roam, I'm not sure if there is anything you can do to prevent it.

Dogs can be trained to do their business on command, or only in certain areas (ie. in the garden or on a walk) but this has to be trained and reinforced by the owners.

Garden sprinkler? Assuming you are often at home. Turn it on every time the dog enters your property.

Thanks all. I don’t think there’s an easy solution that I can implement- the sprinkler would have to be on the drive and I’m pretty certain the post people wouldn’t appreciate that! even though it feels mean, I’ll keep chasing the dog away each time it visits and hopefully it will get the hint.

If the dogs are free to roam and you don't want to fence in your garden, I don't see what you can do to be honest - especially if you like the other neighbourhood dogs and want them to keep visiting.

Probably best regarded as one of those things, like wildlife poo.

SkiingIsHeaven · 03/01/2022 10:46

Pick it up and drop it on their land.

ANameChangeAgain · 03/01/2022 10:54

You are just going to have to ask them to make sure they do a daily sweep of the area and pick up any poo.

yes absolutely "Return to Sender" ....nice pile of their own dogs doings on their own doorstep should shatter the out of sight out of mind attitude they have.

If you feel charitable maybe knock on the door, with the dog and a bagged specimen and "I think these BOTH belong to you"

Dirty wee bleeders!

It's really not difficult to reinforce toilet area for dogs on your own property. Our current dog rarely goes outwith the garden unless we are away, and then we have to factor in a nice long walk so he almost has no option otherwise he will save it up!

People used to take empty 2 litre Coke bottles, fill them with water, and place them horizontally on their lawns, which was supposed to deter dogs from peeing or pooping there. Not sure whether it works but it might be worth a try.
