Anyone added a 2nd chihuahua (or any dog really)

And how did it work out? My girl is not unhappy, but always looking to improve her quality of life and keep reading that they do well in pairs/packs. Interested to hear peoples experiences of adding a second dog. My existing girl is 7 years old and a sweet, sociable thing

Hey! We have a two year old chihuahua cross, and added a little chihuahua puppy in sept. Older dog was fine as an only dog, however we always wanted two, so felt it was a perfect time. In our experience it has enriched our older dogs life. They play together, sleep together and are generally very compatible. I don't know whether it's the breed but I found them to be both pretty chill as puppies, maybe that helped.. having said this, I know this isn't the case for everyone. You have to be prepared for them not to be compatible, and not to like each other because unfortunately that can happen and you won't really know the outcome until you do it.. sorry if it's not much help but thought I'd add my experience.

I recently did this and first ddog was devastated for the first 6 weeks.. they now do play together but I think really after so many years alone he actually just preferred being our only 1. what is she like if another dog is in your house?

Have you had other dogs staying in your house overnight?it is very different to meet dogs outside to actually sharing indoors.I would 100%recommend you have another dog staying as a visitor with you for a few days.too many people have to rehome their second dog again.2 dogs can be an absolute delight for you and the dogs or it could be a nigntmare.test it out first!

So much depends on the dog. One of our dogs strongly implied that his retirement had been ruined (though he settled down well with the new puppy). Another was utterly delighted to have the combo of playmate, sidekick and someone to boss about and supervise.

Introductions are best done on neutral ground (we used a friend's garden).

Thanks all. It's just so hard to know which way to go. I've tried staying with others who have dogs and she's ok - scared of them more than aggressive and becomes even more clingy. So she might have more confidence on her own turf and if they are the same breed. Im just so caught between thinking it could be the best thing I could ever do for her, or it could ruin her nice little life! Personally I am completely fulfilled by having one - so the idea of another is purely for her sake when I've seen her looking bored when I'm working: it's just so hard when you don't know what they are thinking!

I have a toy poodle and added a chihuahua last year and they are really sweet together. It helps that the poodle is really chilled so wasn’t phased by a little ball of energy joining the family.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. If you enjoy having one dog then stick with one - I added a second and it's been hard work. Luckily ours get on great but don't get another just because you think your dog might like it - it might hate it
