How to help my lab stop licking his claw

Hi all
Posting for help on what to do with our lab. He's 6 years old and has caught his nail while out walking. We clean it 5-6 times a day, keep it covered and using antiseptic powder. But he keeps pulling his sock off and licking it while we aren't looking and making it worse and it's so hard to keep clean and dry in this weather

Any advice please? This happened last year and he ended up getting really ill with an infection so we want to be extra careful
Thank you in advance

Cone of shame.

Sagaris · 20/12/2021 20:23

We had exactly this with our beagle earlier in the year - we tried socks, dressing it, you name it.....nothing stopped him. Except for the cone of shame, as @icedcoffees said. He didn't like it, but it was the only thing that helped. It healed in a week or so after that

Is it his dew claw?
I would take him to the vet if so and they might be able to clip it and give him painkillers or anti inflammatories.

mayblossominapril · 20/12/2021 20:26

HAve you tried a sock and gaffa tape or a vet wrap bandage?
The only thing that worked when our lab split the end of his tail was a sticking plaster to cover the open bit and then wrap elaster plant on a roll round it a few times. We did have to keep an eye on it and sometimes the covering stayed on for a few days other times a few hours!

They sell booties e specifically for this in Pets at Home. They are called Ouch or something like that.

FindingMeno · 20/12/2021 20:28

The vet wrap bandage is helpful but any sort of determined effort gets it off ime.

Allthehotchocolate · 20/12/2021 20:32

Wow thanks for the replies!
Not his dew claw thankfully. We've tried to booties from pets at home we have two on rotation, we also have socks and gaffa tape but he pulls it off on the night!
Didn't help today we took him for a walk wrapped on a bootie and two sandwich bags to protect it but it came off while playing with our other pup.
Sounds like the cone of shame is the only way to go. Where is best to get one from? the vets? We have an inflatable one but he's worked out how to get to his foot with that one

Bitter apple spray on the sock if he is getting it off with his teeth? Or yes, a buster collar.

icedcoffees · 20/12/2021 20:53

They sell cones of shame in Pets at Home too - or Amazon/eBay.

Allthehotchocolate · 20/12/2021 21:12

Thank you! Will order one now and hope that helps. He hates it so much so was hoping there was a way without using one

We used a blow up collar for this, not as restrictive (or painful on your calf muscles!) as a cone and enough to stop the obsessive licking for a few days to let things heal.

Sprig1 · 20/12/2021 21:26

I would use a sock, vet wrap and spray in something disgusting tasting. Chili oil, disinfectant, something really unappealing.

Allthehotchocolate · 20/12/2021 21:27

@Mittenmob thank you! Any recommendations on which one to use? We have one but he can still reach his back paw with it on.

Please don't put chilli oil on a dog's dressing covering an injury. It would be extremely painful if it got into the wound, eyes or any other mucous membranes

Please don't give stupid and dangerous advice

@Allthehotchocolate your dog is licking because it's painful. Pain relief will help, please see your vet

Mittenmob · 22/12/2021 21:31

No sorry, mine needed it a long time ago, can't remember where we got it from now!

Veterinari · 22/12/2021 21:40

@Allthehotchocolate

I'd suggest not using antiseptic powder - it's essentially talc and causes wound irritation and impedes healing. There's a reason vets don't prescribe it.

Bathing with warm salt water is your best bet, and seek vet advice if it's not resolved after a couple of days - it likely needs pain relief and may be infected

Allthehotchocolate · 23/12/2021 09:20

Thanks @Veterinari

Definitely won't be using Chilli oil Grin
