Springer losing weight

Dora26 · 18/12/2021 19:04

For last 6 months- since we got her - my 2 year old springer has been losing weight . She’s gone from 17kg to 11kg and I have been feverishly going from bout to bout of loose stools / diarrhoea. No one commented 6 weeks ago when she was spayed but yesterday I just decided enough. Vet did a battery of bloods / all clear, and we go back Mon am for fasting bloods. He was v reassuring- once he looked at her graph he could see she had lost a third of her body weight in 6 months. Has anyone any insight for a worried Mumma. She is fed Hills Sensitive and loves her food and is also in great (springer) form TIA

What dewormer are you using?

Quickchangeartiste · 18/12/2021 21:39

Food intolerance? Does she vomit ?

Try ZD in cans and if that helps add ZD kibble( Hills) or try Royal Canin Hydrolysed.
My lab girl had this problem. We could see her skeleton. Hydrolysed protein made the difference.
Hope you get to the bottom of it quickly .

Cushings or Addison's disease.

Need to have specific testing done for that.

Was the dog tested for diabetes?

itwasntaparty · 18/12/2021 21:41

Diabetes? Did they test glucose?

uppidydoodah · 18/12/2021 21:48

My springer used to go through bouts of awful diarrhoea and lose a couple of KG at a time. She's only 14kg on a good day.
I found nipping it in the bud straight away helped keep the weight on.
For future reference a can of tinned pumpkin will stop diarrhoea in dogs within 24 hours.
Do you think it's just sustained diarrhoea that's caused it? Chicken is a common allergy in springers.
We changed to grain free fish and not had problems for over a year now.

Thank you all for your input. Her wormer is Advocate last dose Oct as Ive been stalling

I would start again with advocate.there are worms, you actually dont see in poo(Whipworm).my one year old collie is very skinny 14.7 kg.she eats well,is lively with shiny coat.I made the mistake of feeding her actually too much for a short while.the result was always loads of pooing and very soft. Her little system could not cope with the amount. It is now all back to normal, but she is a skinny girl.the vet has seen her and told me,she is fine.He told me, most dogs are actually overweight.I hope, now that she is spayed, she will fill out.I think, working dogs are just very active and some dogs are absolutely fine being very slender.is your vet concerned about your spaniel?

Whattochoosenow · 19/12/2021 06:47

Have they sent a faecal sample off including a screen for giardia? The treatment for that is a bit different.
Cushings is normally a disease of middle aged dogs and the presenting sign is drinking excessively.
Addison’s is often, but not always, picked up on routine bloods because the electrolytes are off. It needs a special test to confirm.

icedcoffees · 19/12/2021 11:16

Dogs often love things that aren't good for them so the fact that she loves her food doesn't mean that it's also not bad for her - I don't know what the main protein is in Hills Sensitive but chicken intolerances and allergies are surprisingly common in dogs - it could be that you need to switch her to a fish based food, or another protein like lamb or turkey.

Other things to think about are diabetes and worms. She really needs to be wormed regularly though I understand why you're reluctant to do so. Springers run into undergrowth and can eat all sorts on their walks!

Thatldo · 19/12/2021 11:58

Yes,I agree with pp,you need to worm regularly.Advocate is good,as it keeps working for a month and then you give the next dose,so your dog is always protected against worms, fleas and ticks.

Summerofcontent · 19/12/2021 21:06

I'd also ask for them to test for Addison's.

Dora26 · 01/02/2022 21:06

So to update - multiple blood tests, faecal panel, 2 ultrasounds, megadose of wormer - and she is now skin and bone. Bright eyes and lots of energy but literally fading away 11.3kg last Thursday. Surgery tomorrow to examine an inflamed part of intestine not responding to antibiotics and steroids- vet hoping a foreign body embedded - quite possible as she is an intermittent chewing thief. Handhold please - lost my last beautiful springer at only 3 to osteosarcoma last year - I can’t lose my Rosie girl (1.5)

OP I hope you find the cause and you can bring her back to full health.

Sending positive vibes and a stuffed toy Bear for Rosie.

longtompot · 01/02/2022 21:27

Hope it goes well op. Sounds very worrying losing that much weight so quickly! Hope it's a rogue item she's eaten and easily removed Flowers

OnaBegonia · 01/02/2022 21:39

All the paws crossed here for your girl 🐾🐾🐾

Littlehouseonthefairy · 02/02/2022 10:53

🤞 for you and Rosie. Please update us after the surgery.

Dora26 · 03/02/2022 12:36

Although she is never left to wander, vet recovered a variety of food and non food items from Rosie’s stomach. Also took a couple of biopsies to send off for analysis- still no conclusive answer - and a bill of 1300!

Bought an anti- scavenging muzzle on way home!

OP posts:
longtompot · 03/02/2022 14:33

I am so pleased to read it was an obstruction and not something sinister. They are sneaky beggars aren't they? My spaniel is a plastic fiend, especially lids, but she will give them up for a treat. Trouble is, we've got into the habit of her getting the plastic before I spot them to tell her leave it, so I think she almost searches for the plastic to get the reward.
Hope yours recovers quickly and the muzzle works. Be warned, they can still snaffle stuff through them. I've heard of people using them as their dog is a poo eater. The results aren't great Envy

OnaBegonia · 03/02/2022 18:15

Good news, hopefully makes a speedy recovery.
Baskerville muzzles are the best, please don't use a closed mouth one as they do need to pant.

Littlehouseonthefairy · 04/02/2022 10:32

That sounds good. Hopefully she'll be on the mend now. Pleased to hear it!
