Shiba Inu's where is the love?

We have 2 shiba inu. They are stubborn and can't be off lead but wonderful soft buggers. In Japan and Asia they are everywhere. Why aren't they popular? I'm glad they aren't but they are medium friendly dogs. I love my dogs but wonder why they are not more popular?

Well, my guess is it's in your second sentence - they can't be off-lead. People generally don't like the idea of having dogs who can never run free.

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 17/12/2021 19:07

We planned for our Husky for a year. Not off lead def put me off.. We got one though!
Love your ddogs and the giraffes op!!

Classica · 17/12/2021 19:07

Did you mean 'medium friendly' or 'medium sized and friendly?'

Medium friendly makes me think might not be all that friendly.

They are beautiful though.

Quickchangeartiste · 17/12/2021 19:09

Just be glad they are not over-bred. Gorgeous dogs op. That said , never met one I couldn’t get along with. 😁

Undisclosedlocation · 17/12/2021 19:46

I only know one. He is definitely NOT medium friendly

SoftSheen · 17/12/2021 19:50

There are 3 living locally to me. One is very sweet and friendly, the other two seem a bit aloof (at least with people they don't know well).

Orangesox · 17/12/2021 20:03

I love a Shiba Inu, they’re not the right breed for us sadly, but they are utterly majestic. A neighbour has one that’s practically feral, and also has horrendous digestion issues that lead to it leaving enormous orange liquid piles of stool all over the street (which incidentally they make no attempt to clear up) but I’m certain that’s greater testimony to my neighbours appallingly poor ability to train their dog, the absolute trash they must feed the poor animal, and their terrible anticipation of how stubborn they are, rather than any fault of the dog or the breed as a generalisation.

Yours are absolutely gorgeous OP!

Lochnessgiraffe · 17/12/2021 23:41

Thanks for the love. They know how gorgeous they are. Every stranger tells them. We have a v large garden so they run around lots and walk on a training lead

bumblenbean · 18/12/2021 00:28

Omg they’re gorgeous! I’ve always wanted a shiba inu but I think they’re probably too big for us with very young kids etc. what kind of temperament do yours have and how much exercise do they need? Where did you find a suitable breeder?

TurnUpTurnip · 18/12/2021 00:30

I think they are beautiful!

QuestionNumberOne · 18/12/2021 00:30

Plus are they noisy? They are gorgeous.

DramaAlpaca · 18/12/2021 00:34

They are very handsome dogs, I'll give them that. I've never met a pure bred one.

The only similar one I know is a shiba inu cross which is an aggressive little sod. It's the only dog my bulletproof soppy springer actively dislikes.

Lochnessgiraffe · 18/12/2021 07:31

Medium size and friendly but also Medium friendly dependant on moods. Mine are stupidly friendly they love everyone but are v quiet the occasional howl at the foxes.
We got ours through a European breeder the wait list was around 2 years and they were £££. They need around 3 to 4 hours walk a day. Great with my dds. But they do moult a lot!

Think you've answered the question in your post yourself there, OP LOL.

I love the look of Shibas, did consider them in my recent quest for a smaller breed. The main drawback for me was their reputation for not being particularly sociable with other dogs.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 18/12/2021 10:36

I only know one and he is dog reactive, so has to be on lead at all times and walked at quiet times of day.

icedcoffees · 18/12/2021 10:37

Well, there you have it. Very, very few people are able or willing to give any dog that much exercise.

But I have to ask - do they really need it, though? I have a working breed and he gets 1-2 hours a day, closer to one normally and he's absolutely fine.

AwkwardPaws27 · 18/12/2021 10:42

My husband loves them and really wanted one but we ruled them out as the exercise needs were above what we could offer, I wanted a more biddable breed as a first dog, & we have cats.
We got a cocker spaniel - so still needs quite a bit of exercise, but 1-2 hours rather than 3-4 Grin

Puppylucky · 18/12/2021 17:15

Surprised they need that much exercise - as mentioned earlier they are v popular in Japan - we saw loads in Tokyo - and they looked pretty at home in an urban work oriented environment - doubt many Tokyo dwellers have the time for 2 hour dog walks!

tabulahrasa · 18/12/2021 18:31

I’ve always been under the impression they’re like having cats in a dogs body...don’t like being dirty, can be aloof with other people, prone to just doing what they want rather than what you want...

And I assume they shed like Akitas, which is horrendous.
