Pup started waking in night... Help please

Well, wasn't I feeling smug. Dpup is 5.5 months old, female golden retriever. She has always slept pretty well at night, usually last wee at 9 or 10 and goes through to around 7.

On Monday I forgot to close the stairgate and she snuck up and discovered we have an upstairs and she could go up there.

Every night since she has woken up in the night and grumbled then barked till I get up to let her out for a middle of the night poo and wee. 1am some nights, then 6 am again... 4am last night then 6 am again. Bah.

I'm knackered as I frequently can't fall back to sleep easily. On my own and kids too young to help during night.

How do I go about sorting this? She sleeps downstairs alone, always has. Was in a pen till about 2 to 3 weeks ago and now has run of (same) middle room at night. I don't think it's the pen going, but the fact she has clocked the existence of another floor of the house where her people go.

Otherwise well, well-excercised, eats plenty etc.

No shit, Sherlock Hmm

OP seemed to manage it without resorting to spraying compressed air anywhere near her puppy, anyway :)

@Funmum34 - you may not spray it on the dogs, but it works on the principle of using fear and anxiety to control a dog's behaviour. Most responsible and caring dog owners prefer to use more positive methods. You might find the following article interesting -

Urgh typed a long message and poof, gone in an internet glitch.

Our dog needs to be listened to and be trusting ... Aversives don't work. If she is scared or anxious she will basically do her own thing and aversive stuff also erodes trust in my very limited experience. She is SO much better we when she has had a fuss and some bonding. Just like my kids. Although they don't rely on licking my face thank God.

I suspect you're wasting your time @Medievalist Sad

It does work people & just because you won’t use it or don’t like it doesn’t make it wrong. I personally cannot stand pampered dogs that jump up or come over uninvited & have poor recall, I have 5 working dogs and all are happy & healthy and live in our home before anyone states they must be outside dogs bit as working dogs they have to be trained to exceptional standards. I don’t read articles from so called experts just like I won’t read books about childcare, tried & tested is my only way

I do have a bit of sympathy with @Funmum34, I know what you're saying about a quick intervention and then move on.

Ours tho is such a snowflake that if you look at her funny she will sulk for 24 hours during which time training and recall goes out the window. Different strokes and all that. You do what works for you and suits you.

I don't think anyone said it doesn't work? Electric shock collars and physical abuse "work" if your sole purpose is to frighten your dog into not doing something.

My dog isn’t pampered. He doesnt jump up and his recall is very good. He is very well behaved and I can take him anywhere. I have achieved all this without scaring the shit out of him
