He fucking hates her and won't be in the same room as her.I miss my boy and I just want him to be happy.I know that sounds daft but I'm concerned about him.
Hes a funny thing at the best of times and is more like a cat than a dog in lots of ways.

How were they introduced and what was your older dog like with other pups and dogs he's met out on walks?

GoodnightGrandma · 16/12/2021 07:19

Make sure she cannot harass him.
Make sure he has time with you alone.
Take him for walks on his own for now.
It will take time for him to adapt and realise she’s not leaving, and I’m sure they’ll be great pals when she matures and stops being an annoying brat.

Many years ago I had a 7 year old dog and a new puppy my 7 yo refused to be in the same room as her for well over a week we didn’t let her harass him but didn’t keep him away from her iyswim over a few months they became best friends. Actually it seemed to give him a new lease of life once he excepted her.

That sounds sad for the pup and the boy - what did you do to prepare your son for getting a puppy? Or was it a surprise? I imagine getting a puppy is a bit like getting a sibling, it can upset the household balance as puppies take up a lot of attention. So you'd need to make sure your son still feels like he is getting enough of your time over the puppy. Is he scared of dogs in general or just upset with the lack of control over the big change to his life?

@Borland I think OP is talking about her older dog, not her son Grin

MintyGreenDream · 16/12/2021 08:05

Sorry I was talking about my older dog! The pup isn't being annoying thats the thing she's either in her bed or eating etc.I know these things take time and I'm embarrassed to say it hasn't been a week yet so maybe I'm jumping the gun.

It’s a 5yr old dog, as in the title, not a child.

MintyGreenDream · 16/12/2021 08:13

Is definitely a dog I'm talking about 😀

Sounds a bit strange:the puppy is either eating or in bed???surely a puppy is curious to explore everything and wanting to play with a toy, then there is the pee and poo business.Have you got a garden?most dogs that are a bit shy with other dogs, are better first introduced outside.when I brought my puppy home a year ago,my older(5years) dog looked at me to say: what nuissance model did you bring home.I new my older one hasnt got a vicious bone in her and let her decide when its too much. She told the puppy off a few times and the puppy totally accepted the telling off.are you confident in reading your older dogs body language?do you know when to intervene and when to let them sort it out?how friendly and comfortable with other dogs and puppies was your older dog bevore you got puppy?
