Does anyone have any tips how to remove a knot of hair from behind dogs ear?

She is nervous as she doesn’t understand what I am planning to do when I approach her. She knows I want to poke around behind her ear. I am not sure what best plan of action is ? 😬

I cut my dogs out with rounded ended scissors. X

DramaAlpaca · 16/12/2021 00:01

I have working springers and I have to keep on top of their ears to prevent matting, but some is inevitable. I usually wait until they are asleep, work through knots with my fingers then snip. This also applies to their feathery legs and tails. They don't seem to mind.

Has anyone ever used this?

I use their undercoat rake which is great but I was wondering if the "matt stripper" worked or just cut the entire length off!

InTropicalTrumpsLand · 16/12/2021 00:45

Could you show her the scissors first so she can have a sniff? It might calm her enough you could chop the knott. Curved (russian?) scissors could work, too, as the end isn't so pointy.

If she's prone to getting knots behind her ears, check her armpits. Now those are a pain to cut off.

Thatldo · 16/12/2021 06:24

The lickmat will help.I would suggest, you use the lickmat before you "fiddle" with her knotted hair a few times.hopefully she really likes the lickmat.Mine does, she licks for ages.

BlackSwan · 16/12/2021 06:34

If I offer my dog a treat before obviously being about to groom him he refuses to take it! (No deal mum).
He has even spat out a treat when he realised what the plan was.
Once the grooming is over, then he's happy to accept payment.

I wouldn't bother with the matt splitter... that could only be more painful than the rake.

Goldenhedgehogs · 16/12/2021 08:36

@Blackswan do you think that spray would work on human hair? I have bra length curly hair that I decided to bleach and it tangles terribly. Curly girls method is a bit of a faff so I quite fancy dog shampoo shortcut! I am being serious

Diddytv · 16/12/2021 08:40

I would have thought it would goldenhedgehogs but I expect there is a human equivalent available .

If we put peanut butter on a spoon for Ddog to lick he lets me do anything I want. I could probably perform major surgery without him batting an eyelid.
Make sure it’s dog safe peanut butter though

When our pup had a knot on his head I gave him a pigs ear to chew, put a blob of my conditioner on the knot and worked at it gently with a small comb. All done in about 5 minutes.

Diddytv · 16/12/2021 09:10

I never thought of just using my conditioner

Helenluvsrob · 16/12/2021 09:12

Groomer for now and lots of handling sessions with treats and turn gradually move to combing etc

Diddytv · 16/12/2021 18:08

Chirag patels bucket game went well tonight. Although didn’t manage behind ear at all, but a good start .

It rather depends on the sort of knot.

My dog is long haired and sometimes gets knots around her ears, it's because of her collar, but I've never had to cut one out because I don't let them get to the stage where they're too big to tease out with the brush.

If you deal with them regularly and just work at them for a little while most knots will come out.

I think if I started snipping at my dogs neck she'd get very freaked out and it would all end in tears.

BlackSwan · 16/12/2021 20:54

Golden, I don’t think it would necessarily work… fur has quite a different texture to human hair. But you could give it a go. It smells minty… perhaps tomorrow I’ll spray a bit on my hair Smile and see what effect it has!

Goldenhedgehogs · 17/12/2021 08:03

@BlackSwan @Diddytv thank you both, would be very interested in reports of effectiveness on human hair. Minty sounds good too, if I have any cash given to me for a Christmas present I am going to buy a bottle. Can’t believe the price tho! You would think dog stuff would be cheaper than human.

Diddytv · 29/12/2021 19:51

Update. Finally got knot out by rapid firing treats from a bowl while I brushed and teased out the knot using a dog tangle teezer. Going to try and keep on top of it from now on with regular grooming.

My Saint just sits there and lets me cut out the tuggy bit behind her ear. I just use a pair of scissors.

If your dog is nervous, just keep touching their ears regularly so it's not a big deal then once they get used to it you can attempt to take out the tuggy bit with scissors?

User48751490 · 29/12/2021 21:17

Just read your update 🙌 fantastic!

Anordinarymum · 29/12/2021 21:19

I would use a razor and pretend you are combing

Diddytv · 29/12/2021 21:38

The razor trick sounds quite good. I did buy a special tool for dematting which was like a razor but I am a bit scared of the sharpness of it

Bellesjp · 29/12/2021 21:48

For future knots I find cutting into the knot with thinning scissors helps then you can gently tease it out x

Catsrus · 30/12/2021 10:25

I've got these - really useful little things for matts.
