Just paid the deposit for a miniature red dachshund puppy yet to be born! Please tell me nice things! First time dog owning family! Excited but terrified! It's going to be like having another baby in the family!

@Twoweekcruise

I am a dog Walker and have walked many. Gorgeous little dogs but quite hard to train as they are quite head strong. Also as others have said please get good insurance, daxies have lots of health issues especially with their backs, legs and hips. And please, please make sure the breeder is reputable. Personally I have a huge issue with the rise of ‘fashionable’ dog breeds, many have such awful health issues.
All about the insta innit?
bollocksthemess · 15/12/2021 21:41

I paid a deposit for my dog six months before she was conceived, it’s not completely unheard of when there are many people wanting a dog from a particular litter, and sorts out the definite buyers from the time wasters. Deposit would be returned if not enough/no puppies/wrong sex etc.
Mine’s a Vizsla, so the complete opposite to a mini dachshund. Wouldn’t be a breed I would choose but I like a robust sort of a dog to do a particular job for me, as a companion dog I think they’re quite sweet but a bit barky and can be snappy.

Thischarmlessgirl · 22/02/2022 19:03

Just saw this and wanted to add, I have a almost 3 year old mini dachshund and she’s marvellous. Toilet trained fine, loves people and most other dogs (a bit aloof with husky type dogs for some reason) she’s super affectionate and sweet. She doesn’t have separation anxiety but would always choose to be with someone than without. Good breeding (we were on a waiting list for 18 months and lots and lots of early socialising I think has played a big part, she still goes to doggy day care once a week for fun. They do get lots of attention and people shouting “sausage” at them which can be relentless but their size means she’s super transportable and she can out walk all of us. Good luck!

I'm into week 3 of having my mini sausage puppy. My observations (having been an experienced dog owner but different breed):

Toilet training is hard. I feel like we have made next to no progress despite being super vigilant, lots of praise outdoors & ignoring mess indoors. Not working so far. Frustrating. He even pees in his actual bed. Madness.

Silly barking. Exciting barking, begging barking etc. We are working hard at this and having some success I think.

Needy - he loves everyone so far but likes to be with us a lot. I find it noticeable.

Positives: cute, very smart (easy to teach tricks), very funny to watch, cuddly & affectionate, lots of people love to say hello.

If I'm completely honest, I'm not sure he is the breed for me in reality. I prefer my usual breed. Everything I've read about dachshunds seems to be true!

So, good luck. If it's your dream (like it was mine) then I'm sure you'll make it work.

Our mini sausage pup arrives in 2 weeks and I admit I’m cacking it.

But actually this is exactly what I’ve read about dachshunds so at least I’m prepared. We’ve been on a breeders list for a year and I’ve read and read and read about daxies, joined fb groups, read blogs, read stuff from the breed council and whilst I appreciate it’s not substitute for experience, I feel like I’m going in with my eyes open

Thischarmlessgirl · 23/02/2022 21:12

@livingthegoodlife - we used to give a tiny piece of cheese or chicken every time she went to the toilet outside, we also used training bells (would tap her nose on the bell hanging on the back door everytime we let her out) seemed to help as she wouldn’t “ask” to go otherwise.

livingthegoodlife · 23/02/2022 21:26

Thank you @thischarmlessgirl we'll give it a go. We've tried treats but maybe they need to be more interesting.

And @MabelMoo23 I really hope it goes well for you. I did my reading too but felt like it would be better in real life. But it isn't! Lol. I'm sure your pup will be well loved. Ours certainly is despite the challenges.

You can tell from my username what I think of the breed Grin.

Agree with everything said about them so far. Ours took ages to toilet train and now, at 18 months, he still has the very occasional accident inside. He's so lovable though and can be a bit clingy. He loves his toys more than anything in the world but it's hard finding anything he doesn't destroy. Squeaky balls are his fave. Soft toys are a no-no for ours as he has a bit of object possessiveness and can be a raging devil when he's protecting something. He's much better since being neutered tho, much calmer. I love him to bits.

Happenchance · 23/02/2022 22:12

we also used training bells (would tap her nose on the bell hanging on the back door everytime we let her out) I wouldn't do this. Dogs noses are very sensitive to pain. This could backfire and make your dog scared of being taken outside to toilet.

Thischarmlessgirl · 24/02/2022 09:59

@Happenchance i didn’t realise this! She taps the bell herself whenever she wants to go out now.
@Sausagedogsarethebest - great username 😊 mine isn’t bothered about toys really though she likes a squeaky ball 🏀

Pre-conception deposit? Breeder is legit because they charge ££££?! Surely you're pulling out leg, OP.

ExConstance · 24/02/2022 14:39

25% of dachshunds have back problems. We had a long haired standard many years ago, he was the sweetest most lovely and loving dog you could imagine, even our grumpy old colllie cross bitch adored him. Sadly he got disc problems, he was clearly in a lot of pain and despite very expensive surgery at the Bristol University vet hospital he could not be cured. We tried very hard with rehab but eventually there was no option but to have him PTS. It still upsets me to think about it. Much as i love the breed I would never have another, it seems wrong to breed dogs that are so prone to this disability.

wetotter · 24/02/2022 14:43

It's going to be like having another baby in the family!

It's more like having a furry toddler who will never grow up. With teeth!

cjpark · 24/02/2022 16:57

My friend has a mini dach which at 9 months is still toileting in the house. She took 8 weeks off over the summer to devote to toilet training and settling the pup and had to go back to work 9-12am when pup was nearly 5 months. She comes home every day to poop and wee in her kitchen and finds it difficult to get people to dog sit as pup is still not toilet trained.

We’ve not been charged a deposit at all. Been on breeders waiting list a year, collect pup in 2 weeks and will pay day before collection.

But not had to pay a deposit, but was extensively vetted. So paying a deposit before even conception is absolutely insane, there is no guarantee there will even be pups or the correct number for people who have paid a deposit

Update! Otto was born on 21st February. Lots of videos (even the birth) and communication from breeder (weight, eyes opening, worming etc). Meeting him on 3rd April and he's joining us 2 weeks later! Life is certainly going to become more 'interesting' very soon!

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 10/03/2022 08:05

So was mum already pregnant when you paid the deposit?

livingthegoodlife · 10/03/2022 08:09

That's so exciting @Parques! Our mini dachshund pup is now 17 weeks ish. I'm pleased to report he is now toilet trained (I'm not going to say bomb proof, but it's been nearly a week with no accidents and he signals at backdoor). He is sweet and adorable. We are working on his walking.

Have a wonderful time. Don't be concerned if it all feels overwhelming. I think when I wrote my last post I was exhausted! Things much better now.

Fantastic news. We collect Mabelpup tomorrow as she was 8 weeks yesterday

@Parques I’m thinking of a mini Daxie just wondering how Otto settled in and if you’ve been happy with the breed?

Parques · 16/05/2024 06:55

It’s been an experience! He is the most gorgeous, loving dog and quickly got the hang of toilet training and crate training as a pup. But, my goodness he’s stubborn!!!!! If he doesn’t want to walk, he won’t! He is so fussy with food - I can’t believe we’ve got a dog that doesn’t relish eating! I’m still searching for the holy grail of food after wasting so much money! The local animal rescue centre certainly gets a lot of quality food donated from Otto! We had some 1-1 training as he could be quite reactive to some dogs (random dogs - no logic!) by barking. He is 100% better now. They are a wonderful breed and to see Otto trotting along with his little ginger bottom always fills me with joy. Everyone loves sausage dogs, so prepare for lots of admirers. We wouldn’t change our Otto for the world. Best decision ever. Xxxxxx Please keep in touch.
