How to keep puppy calm after spay?

Puppy's being neutered tomorrow I'm dreading trying to keep her calm because she's bonkers at the best of times - I can possibly persuade her not to run round like an idiot but how do I stop her getting on the sofa?

Picture for attention - she had a haircut yesterday ready for surgery tomorrow

Hi
We are past this by about 2 months.
My pup also loves to parkour around the furniture so it was very much close supervision.

Basically we made up a bigger play pen type area that had nothing she could jump onto. One of us often sat in there with her to play sniffing games or do bits of training type brain games.

If she was out of her pen or crate then we had her on a lead so that she couldn't jump up onto the furniture. We sat on the floor with her too. If we left her for any time whatsoever she went into her pen or crate.

It's full on, but worth it. The vet explained to me how vital it was that she didn't jump because of the muscles that need to fix together inside her. It's not just the stitches we can see that can be damaged, but the ones inside them that we can't see.

Our girl (27kg!) was doped out of her tree for three days on tramadol. They gave us 24hrs worth but she was in agony so we had it topped up. She didn't want to do anything for that period. I had to syringe water into her for the first 24hrs but she is a drama llama at the best of times.

All trips out to the loo (she refuses to use the garden) were on lead and her harness to prevent zoomies.

Indoors, we encouraged her on her bed instead of the sofa. All play was quiet play with snuffle mats and food licking and chewing toys, not soft toys to murder or chase. Lots of fussing and brushing.

She coped. She was bored, but did well.

No one told us about the first poo though - she screamed and was clearly in a LOT of pain. Makes sense when you think about it as they cut open the stomach muscles much like a cesarean, so bearing down is painful for them. I wish they'd warned us.

Cait73 · 14/12/2021 13:49

@SilverHairedCat well thank you for the first poo warning, poor poor things!

It's going to be super hard I have a very physical 2 year old so I can see Peggy spending more time in her crate than I'd like her to but it's not a huge amount of time out of her life so I guess we've just got to go with it

I can't risk my gs whooping her up no no no

Following

I have a 18 month old English Springer spaniel who really needs spayed after her Frist season resulted in a phantom pregnancy. I'm dreading trying to keep her in doors for 10 days.

Cait73 · 14/12/2021 14:41

@LifeIsBusy gosh good luck, there's a reason they're call springers, they're born with boings in their paws bless them

Tbh I think Peggy was too she spends her life leaping up into the air

@Cait73 they are a very well named bread and they can only travel at 500mph. I'm hoping to hold off until the new year as I don't think a wired spaniel on as day is something I need 🤣.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

NowNumber5 · 14/12/2021 18:39

@Cait73

How is she doing Cait73?

Cait73 · 14/12/2021 18:45

Feeling oh so sorry for ourselves, crying gently in her sleep incase I forget she's had a hard day!

She's not argued about the crate I'm sure she will tomorrow, I'm going to get her up in a bit see if she'll eat or wee

The nurse that discharged her said they DONT expect me to crate her for 10 days just crate her when unsupervised

Her stitches are internal, the op went well she was scared (she's a very nervous dog) but bonded with one nurse so she did everything

All in all, so far so good, praying for a peaceful night for her

Oh look at her little face! What a sweetheart.

Hope the night wasn’t too bad for you both, and she recovers well x

How old is she? My pup is coming up to 6 months and I’ve had a variety of opinions as to when is the best time to spay her.

Cait73 · 15/12/2021 21:51

@NowNumber5 Peggy's a week short of 6 months but because of Christmas and the possibility of first season, the vet was happy to proceed

I know she looks tiny but she's a fit and healthy little thing!

It's hard work not going to lie I have taken all the cushions off the sofas and I'm sleeping (haha) with her on the floor. No walkies yet but she potters round outside we've had several successful toilets (both ends) and she's eating and drinking

Only real difficulty is keeping her and 2 year old separate they're very rough with each other! But she's okay in her crate for times I can't supervise

All in all it's going better than anticipated and hard though it is, I'm glad it's done

2 days post op and things are getting tricky; Peggy doing well eating, drinking asking to go out for toilet (one accident) and better in herself but she's a very bouncy puppy and it's started

Every time I take her out of her crate she's leaping 2/3 feet into the air

I try to preempt thus by lying on the floor but she see's 2 year old and just starts bouncing

All in all however it's going well OH and no painful poo but it is exceptionally hard, which is odd lol
