Must have dog walking recommendations

My puppy is only 4 months and we don’t live near any woods or fields so it is mostly park walking unless we drive somewhere, but I’m quickly discovering I don’t own the right clothing.
With budget in mind as I feel like I’m spending most of my money on dog toys at the moment Grinl, can anyone recommend footwear and a warm coat, but one that I’d wear every day too.
Also, bags to just grab and go with everything you need in it and somewhere to keep treats that’s easily accessible.
Thanks

I wear walking boots I got from mountain warehouse (had them for 3 years now and still going strong!) and my coat is a craghopper that I found in a charity shop (best find ever) it has a removable fleece so I wear it and the fleece all the time together and separately. I got my dog walking bag from the national trust shop (they seem to sell small outdoorsy bags from time to time) although have also previously used a bumbag as well! I also tend to wear a woolly snood because my neck kept getting cold 😁

Simonjt · 11/12/2021 14:32

We have a dog walking bum bag, it has a few pockets, so one for treats, one for poo bags and another that fits a ball. When he was a puppy I wore it all the time so positive behaviour could be quickly rewarded.

Walking bootsor wellies, didrikson coat (I'm tall but they are so warm and cosy, lots of pockets too) and ski gloves at this time of year.

wetotter · 11/12/2021 14:49

I have Dublin boots (just as good as Dubarry, which I had before, but half the price). Muck Boots also an increasingly popular choice. Or walking boots, trail running shoes (might want to add gaiters) or good old fashioned basic wellies

I have a tweedy coat (bought at a country fair yonks ago, which is still going strong) and which has enough pockets to stuff all the things like poo bags and treats. But I use a bum bag in summer and think that's also good for year round - you don't need one specifically for dog walking, but you do need one that you can fit all your stuff in (and perhaps attach a doggy water bottle to)

Other useful stuff includes fleece gloves, woolly hat, waterproof hat, neck buffs of various thicknesses and good warm socks

icedcoffees · 11/12/2021 14:50

I wear wellies as I walk along beaches and in woodland and dry feet are a must. No bags - everything goes in my pockets. I wear walking coats and good waterproof overtrousers too.

Bebeschitt · 11/12/2021 22:21

I've just bought some Karrimor walking boots for £25 from Wyndsor. I had the same ones for 4 years and wore them to death. Waterproof and warm.

I love fingerless gloves/wrist warmers. Easier to deal with poo and treats. And a treat bag to clip to your pocket is great too.

I generally walk in Woof wear short yard boots unless it’s really muddy then I wear Dublin river boots , the woof wear boots are really comfortable and last ages . Unless you are going to be constantly washing things then I would advise a dedicated dog walking coat as mine gets very mud splattered . I don’t carry a bag I just have a coat with very large pockets for bags / balls / biscuits / my inhaler / keys/ phone .

StillMedusa · 12/12/2021 01:31

I live in Ariat Langdale boots (leather wellies) as they are so comfy and waterproof.
Warm padded raincoat in winter, Barbour in spring. Has to have big pockets for phone, poo bags etc I agree a dedicated dog coat is a must..mine are always splattered with mud!
I wear a treat pouch on a belt with a magnetic closure (easier than draw string for instant treats)
Beanie hat for cold days and something with a brim for rain! I have some truly ugly hats Grin

You need: Wellies,Walkingboots,waterproof jacket,waterproof (over)trousers.
For warmth, wear layers under your waterproof jacket. You will get what you pay for,so if possible dont go for cheap waterproofs.

Totalwasteofpaper · 12/12/2021 05:22

We keep it quite simple

We have walking shoes or wear old trainers if dry (walking shoes/ boots are Colombia)
And a very light big waterproof jacket from kirkland Costco Grin

We got this tiny zip pouch that clips onto the lead for treats and another for bags. Total game changers.

For bigger outings we have a day bag which has

  • silicone food and drink bowl that zips into a pouch like a CD travel case good if we go to pubs or stop when out.
  • a Petkit Dog Water Bottle with Filter which is great and does not leak.
  • an all in one lightweight waterproof puddle suit
  • A travel towel (v small but v absorbent)
  • ziplock with snacks

I have a non waxed Barbour Knee Length coat for the winter . Durbarry boots , and water proof trousers .

I have an old cross body handbag I think that's just for walking the dog . I have the following in it

Poo Bags
Squeaky Ball
Treats
hand wipes ( another dog jumped on me one day covered in shit )
A torch for looking for poo in the dark

Grumpyosaurus · 12/12/2021 07:58

Cheap wellies with warm woolly socks.
Warm waterproof coat (try and get one with cuffs inside the sleeves - keeps the wind out).
Lightweight waterproof coat for summer.
Waterproof trainers for summer.
Bum bag.

Grumpyosaurus · 12/12/2021 08:00

Oh, and a small first aid kit in the car (for both you and dog). Very handy when I lacerated myself on brambles the other day.

CarrieMoonbeams · 12/12/2021 08:16

I have a finely-tuned selection of dog walking coats that I've tried and tested over the years - these will always be replaced like for like when they start to look too disgraceful.

  1. Barbour parka with big furry hood
  2. short Jack Wolfskin puffa jacket and
  3. fleece-lined Joules Coast jacket.

They all have decent pockets so the only time I carry a bag is when I'm not wearing a coat, and I have a Jack Wolfskin cross body bag then which is great for biscuits, poo bags, a bottle of water and a fabric foldable water bowl.

Footwear is either Dubarry boots, Joules wellies, or Jack Wolfskin walking trainers.

(For clarity, I'm not sponsored by any of the above companies!! I just find their stuff really robust.)

AbsolCatly · 12/12/2021 08:20

Dublin boots for wet, winter walks, decent walking boots for spring / summer

Waterproof jacket / body warmer as needed by the wonderful Scottish weather

I have an old cross body bag that holds treats, tissues, poo bags, ball, inhaler, lip balms etc in different pockets and a mini torch that clips on to the outside, means can grab and go and not worry about what goes where if it is nice enough not to wear a big jacket

Also have a rechargeable light up collar for early/ late walks

Did buy a dookey thingy that clips on to leads and can hold full poo bags, that helps free up hands

Bebeschitt · 12/12/2021 08:32

Some people have a different idea of budget to me 😂
If I could afford Dubarry boots, I'd wear them out out!
I am mostly dressed in Primark and Asda with the odd splash of Go Outdoors (regatta coat)
I do love my asda lined leggings though for this time of the year. Slightly too short and I'm not tall but paired with long socks and my £25 walking boots I can get away with it.

PermanentlyDizzy · 12/12/2021 10:22

My dogwalking gear is a bit lower budget than a lot of the previous posts on this thread. I would seriously love some boots like Dubarry’s though.

I have a long, cotton-lined, waterproof coat from Lazy Jacks, which I bought from TK Maxx about 5-6 years ago and still looks as good as new. It has two massive pockets for poo bags, treats etc and another in the lining for cash/phone/keys. It has plenty of room for a nice thick fleece or jumper underneath, but the cotton lining means it’s equally good with just a tshirt on warm/wet days and I have never been either too hot or too cold in it - which isn’t bad, considering I have a health condition that means I have a seriously dodgy thermostat! It may not be the most stylish coat in the world, but it’s properly waterproof and smart enough. I wore it for school runs while my dc were still in primary and passed muster in a playground awash with the likes of Seasalt, Joules and Barbour. (It’s sort of coated, so mud doesn’t stick and you never end up standing in the playground looking scruffy.)

For longer walks I have a dog walking bag, which I chose off Etsy and had for a Christmas present, as I can fit a lot more in that and clip a water bottle to the side. I also have a cheap, treat/bait bag, that I bought from Bitiba for £4.00, looked at loads of expensive ones, but couldn’t see how any of them were actually any better and this one has been fine.

My choice of winter footwear is neoprene lined wellies. They’re brilliant for keeping feet warm and mine are equally at home at a music festival or school fireworks night as they are in a muddy-dog walking field.

I have a waterproof bakerboy hat, purely because no other style of hat suits me. Plus a beanie with a torch/light fitted in the front for dark, winter walks (thankfully, the bright light means no-one can see how awful I look in it Blush ) and late night garden toilet/trips. Also waterproof running/cycling gloves, which are thin enough for you to be able to manage lead/harness clips without taking them off.

cherrypiepie · 12/12/2021 11:01

Grubs wellies (they are the dream even for wide calfed me)and trainers in summer.

I have a longish Barbour Parka that was bought to wear out now relegated to dog walking. I get super hot though. Hat. Head torch. I wear cosy leggings in the winter ans shorts and t shirts in the summer. I have bum bag for the key and phone in summer. I have a whistle but don't take anything else. I have been know to stuff key and poo bags in my wellies.

I'd get used to taking ddog out from home though even a 10 minute walk on lead round the block.

I wish I could be like the others who just take the dog out in what ever they are wearing- I seem to have a whole wardrobe for dog walking. A body warmers is good and I for mine from vinted for £2 and I bloody love it.

JengaCupboard · 13/12/2021 17:19

I have some Dublin boots bought practically brand new from Facebook marketplace for £40.00 and a super thick deep zippy pocket coat (men's sports brand) from the charity shop for £12. If it get VERY cold I get out my skiing thermals and even salopettes...

I haven't done summer yet however, but i'm envisaging maybe a drawstring backpack type bag and maybe my old redundant running trainers.. not waterproof though... maybe some walking boots

I've had some great finds off marketplace and the charity shops - i'm not spending tonnes of money on new stuff just for it to be dirty by the weekend... JDog drains all my funds as it is...
