2 year old dog with absolutely rancid breath!

But perfect teeth…

She is a 2 yo working lab, raw fed and in otherwise excellent condition - perfect weight and coat, but her breath could strip paint

She is fed the same food and treats (raw bones plus occasional dentastick) as our 8yo dog, who despite having a few old teeth, has lovely clean breath so I can’t work out why the pup reeks so badly

She had her boosters about 3 months ago, with a full check up and teeth check then, and got a clean bill of health, and the vets are currently full for non-emergency appointments til Christmas so can’t see her again

Any idea what could cause it? She can be a bit of a scavenger but hasn’t eaten anything heinous for a while, plus this has been an issue for over a month, rather than on the same day she has scoffed something grim

If there is nothing healthwise, have you tried charcoal biscuits/parsley biscuits?

An old lass of mine went through periods of having a reeking mouth (no health issues at the time) and they helped a bit.

The current mistress? It is the only sign she gives if she is poorly. She doesn’t cry whinge or nope but you know if she is unwell by her smell. Not rancid though. Just not as sweet as usual.

If it is a recent thing it is worth checking her mouth to ensure that nothing has got stuck in her mouth.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 09/12/2021 13:16

Mope not nope.

SmolCat · 09/12/2021 13:23

Their mounts smell awful if their anal glands need doing.

thumbtom · 09/12/2021 13:32

To echo Lingus - an old dog I had had breath that would knock you out for a while - it turned out he had a bit of a stick wedged between his teeth across the roof of his mouth. It must have been horrendously uncomfortable for him as well.

Pickles89 · 09/12/2021 13:34

Get his anal glands seen to and see if that helps?

Quickchangeartiste · 09/12/2021 13:37

Was going to say anal glands, and it may well be that, but I find I can usually tell if it glands by the faint whiff I get as they wag their tailsâ€¦đŸ¤¢

Thanks

I’ve phoned the vet again and pleaded for them to fit her in with a nurse for an anal gland squeeze, and a proper check of her gob to make sure she hasn’t got anything wedged in there

If that doesn’t work, we will hit the listerine Grin

My dog only started having an anal gland problems in the last year (she's nearly 11 years old now) and, my goodness, it's incredibly noticeable when they need emptying; I can smell her from across a room.

It's actually quite helpful in my dog's case, as apart from being smelly and having a slight reluctance to walk anywhere, she has no symptoms.

What about something stuck in her nose?
