Breed specific rescue. Anyone bought an older dog online?

So DS dream dog is a Boston Terrier.
DH and I are in negotiations about getting one in the summer.
Thing is, I really don't want a puppy. We have 2 older dogs and really don't want to do the puppy stage.

So the obvious choice is a breed specific rescue. However we have been down that road before (with my older dog) and found the process very stringent and were ultimately told 'no'. I feel like it would be the same situation this time round.

So where would we find an older dog of a specific breed. Over the last few months I've seen several older dogs advertised online, through pet selling websites, but for obvious reasons am cautious about that avenue.

Any suggestions or advice please?

You could ask breeders if they’ve got any older ones that need a home.

Some good breeders have retirement programs OP. Once the dogs are done breeding, around age 5, they are offered spayed/neutered for homes interested in acquiring older dogs.

Ocasionally, these breeders will offer younger dogs that aren't pups, either. Think dogs that didn't quite fit in the show ring (too energetic), not quite the right personality (too shy) or lacking some important parts, such as one testicle, which stops them being shown.

I would definitely avoid just buying online - sounds like impulse buyers who are trying to recoup costs with problem dogs. So really, do the same process you would with a pup: find a good breeder, except instead of enquiring about litters, enquire about adults instead.

I second finding a decent breeder and seeing if they have any youngsters that don't like showing

Thankyou!

I didn't even think of that. I will do that!

You could join Champdogs and ask if they have older dogs, whereabouts in the country are you based.

The Boston Terrier Rescue UK have a webpage of dogs currently being assessed for rehoming

Not the same breed but my dog’s mum retired to live in the Lake District when she had finished breeding (not a lie, the breeder has a Facebook group where all her dogs’ owners keep in touch) and her older stud dogs either go to her parents or go and work on shoots and live with her friends, just coming back for stud duties.
It definitely does happen, and would be nicer than just buying one from preloved where you won’t know what you’re getting.
