Dogs 1st season- Will the bleeding last much longer?!

DDog is 14 days into her first season and still bleeding. It has slowed but still quite big drips. I read bleeding lasts 7-10 days. Is it normal to last much longer? Also weary of cleaning up after on top of everything else. Be nice to think it will stop soon!

She’s a lab by the way if that makes any difference.

My Collie's first heat lasted 28 days! She is thankfully spayed now.

CastMeAdrift · 08/12/2021 18:13

Oh no! Not what I wanted to hear ! Oh well getting her spayed next year so hopefully only have to do this once. Poor love is so bored stuck in.

We just had first season. Bleeding was 14 days. Then I waited a further two weeks before mixing with random dogs again

Aria20 · 08/12/2021 19:28

Same as @Turquoisesol 14 days bleed and then another 2 weeks to be sure.... we did on lead pavement walks at random times and if we saw another dog crossed over or walked opposite way.

CastMeAdrift · 08/12/2021 19:43

Thanks for the replies. Hopefully she’ll stop soon then. We have been having short on lead walks on the street and crossing the road when we spot other dogs. But we live in such a doggy area it’s constant. She’s used to exploring the woods off lead so is quite miffed I think. Oh well, two weeks until back to that at least.

@ThatIdo how was your collie after spay? That’s next hurdle to get through

Aria20 · 08/12/2021 20:05

@CastMeAdrift mine had her season after kennel cough so had 6 weeks of not being allowed offlead!! She had major zoomies when I let her off and we have to go back to basics with recall!

Thatldo · 09/12/2021 11:11

@Turquoisesol.she had Laproscopy(only ovaries are removed) and she was back to normal in 4 days.it is a bit more expensive then the "full" spay, but worth it if you have an active dog.I am so glad, she is spayed now and has freedom for the rest of her life.you have to wait for the spay 3 months after your girl finished her heat.good luck.

Turquoisesol · 09/12/2021 11:17

Thank you. I was thinking to get the laparoscopy too. Did you do it after first season? Did you notice any changes afterwards to her temperament?

Whitney168 · 09/12/2021 11:20

You may well be aware of this, but just in case - it's when they STOP bleeding that they are at the optimum time for mating, so don't take that as the end of the season ...

Thatldo · 09/12/2021 16:19

@Turquoisesol.yes,she had one season and then spayed.its a bit early days,as only spayed 6 weeks ago.but I never noticed any problems with all my other female collies.they usually calm down a bit.the best is the freedom really and no more annoying boys sniffing around her all the timeGrin

Turquoisesol · 09/12/2021 16:55

Thanks that sounds positive x

HolidaysAreHolidays · 09/12/2021 16:57

Our lab is the same, first season and it's been about 14 days. I think the bleeding is definitely less but she is still very swollen and we've had a few spaniels dash over. We're doing pavement walks around our estate but she's used to fields and rivers so she's also a bit miffed. Hopefully not too much longer.

CastMeAdrift · 09/12/2021 21:46

Still going today. No spots all morning so I was hopeful that was it but then quite a bit this afternoon. And had read that it’s after the bleeding they are most fertile. But I wonder if some dogs just bleed the whole way through? Will play it safe anyway. But thankfully we’ve mange to avoid any unwanted attention so far.

I’m hoping my vets do the ovary removal option as sounds so much easier on them. How much more expensive is it @Thatldo @Turquoisesol?

Our lab bled for 4 weeks. The week after her bleeding stopped a few males were extremely interested in her.

puppygalore · 09/12/2021 21:56

My Lab bled for a solid 4 weeks too, she did keep herself very clean, though it was annoying as she couldn't have her doggy daycare days or be around our usual places with her boy dog friends. When I did accidentally run into an entire dog they weren't at all interested in her. I'd given her some tablets that are meant to reduce the scent and also tried bitch spray, it seemed to have worked. Hope it's over sooner for yours!

Turquoisesol · 09/12/2021 22:07

I haven’t priced up the op yet. I think it’s typically an extra £200 or 300. But the recovery is so much quicker and my vets said that she would t need the dreaded cone which would help a lot. I moved to a different vets just so we were at one that did the laparoscopic spay.

Lifeisforalimitedperiodonly · 09/12/2021 22:32

Not sure if you've thought is this but we bought washable nappies for our dog. They have a liner to remove and then the rest can be popped in the washing machine. Our dog was black and they were hardly noticeable. Saves your furniture.

Phantom1 · 09/12/2021 23:07

Get some dog knickers.

Chickpea22 · 10/12/2021 06:55

castmeadrift our vet has quoted £800 but I don’t know how that compares with other vets.

I paid £450,I got a bottle of metacam(painkiller) and a free telephone consultation after op from the vet that performed the op.
Thatldo · 10/12/2021 16:57

@Turquoisesol.you will get what looks like a wet suitGrin for your girl to protect the small 3 "wounds".I would recommend to get a small bottle of Hibiscrub(from vet or Boots) to clean her belly a bit after a muddy walk.It is a really good mild antiseptic wash and will help the healing too.

StillMedusa · 10/12/2021 17:03

I paid £500 for laporoscopic spay just over a year ago. Worth every penny! My girl was groggy and cried after the op.. by the following morning she was eating and drinking and perky and by day 3 we were out on walks..day 4 she jumped a fence! Only needed a suit on for the first night and had two tiny stitches. So much easier and gentler than a traditional spay.

Chickpea22 · 10/12/2021 17:21

Sounds like we are being quoted an extremely high price! Glad other people posted.
