Long lasting chew

Our dog loves to chew, her favourite things are pizzles but they are quite high in fat. Anything else similar that I can give her? Beef tails are good too...think she has a chicken intolerance so nothing with chicken in it. Tried antler but she wasn't interested...not meaty enough 😊

Yak sticks? Buffalo horns?

icedcoffees · 07/12/2021 20:30

Buffalo or camel skins.
Beef skins.
Beef trachea.
Buffalo/cows/goats ears.
Lamb braids.
Ostrich bones or treats.

GuyFawkesDay · 07/12/2021 20:33

Ostrich bones
Buffalo skin
Camel skin
Paddywhack

Offmyfence · 07/12/2021 21:11

Camel roll

Thatldo · 07/12/2021 21:21

Yak sticks

Goawayangryman · 07/12/2021 21:58

Hairy rabbit hide rolls last a long time.
Hairy cow ears were a hit here for about 5 minutes.
Good old fashioned raw lamb bones seem to last ages.
If you are sensitive to the smell... Go with the rabbit skin ;)

duvetdrama · 07/12/2021 22:27

I like the look of the root chew Smile Might give that a go. Heard about ostrich bones too.

She demolishes a lamb braid in about 5 minutes and the yak wasn't a hit but lots of other ideas to try, thank you!

Her friend has one and shes much more of a chewer and it seems to have lasted her ages

They aren't cheap but they seem to be worth it

My dog is obsessed with chewing but only things he thinks are food or my soft furnishings
I pretty much have to give him some kind of chew on a daily basis to settle him down or he goes crazy chewing up everything in the house.

Plastic/ rubber chew toys zero interest
Soft toys just get ripped to pieces in one session
Dental sticks are gone in seconds
Kong only interesting whilst it has food in it
Yak chew some mild interest but doesn't love it
Pigs ears, pizzles, beef trachea are his absolute favourites but aside from the smell these are a once a week treat due to the fat content aren't they and he needs to chew stuff every day
We do resort to rawhide although it's supposed to be a bad thing but it shuts him up for a long time and lasts more than a day
I think the tree root might only be as interesting as the Yak thing
I haven't dared get him an antler yet in case of tooth breakage and as they are so expensive but I might do soon

Watching to see if anyone has any 'swears by' solutions for chewy dogs.
Maybe camel/ buffalo skin is a good alternative to rawhide?

unidentia · 08/12/2021 16:57

Cardboard box - mine spits the pieces out, no good if they swallow them.
A heavy duty box best but check no staples etc.

GuyFawkesDay · 08/12/2021 17:15

An Amazon box was our little guys adopted bed and chew toy on one for a few weeks he lay in his "bed" whilst chewing the sides 🤣

Once they get to 16 weeks life opens up more. The vegetable chews are great from then on.

duvetdrama · 08/12/2021 19:43

@CovoidOfAllHumanity how about beef tails? They last a good while and I think are not as high in fat. Our dog really needs stuff to chew as well, paddywhack is pretty good also.

OP posts:
CovoidOfAllHumanity · 08/12/2021 20:39

Thanks for that. I'm going to give those a try. What actually is Paddywhack?

GuyFawkesDay · 08/12/2021 20:46

Beef tails gave ours the bum of doom. Ditto beef twists.

Paddywhack is dried beef tendon. Doesn't give him the bum of doom 🤷‍♀️ think it's 16+ weeks though.

icedcoffees · 08/12/2021 21:06

Beef tails smell absolutely horrific...

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 08/12/2021 21:12

He is 6months so maybe paddywhack is the thing.
I had no idea that nursery rhyme was referring to an actual thing. I thought it was just some rhyming sounds. Every days a school day.

GuyFawkesDay · 08/12/2021 21:17

Mine is the same age and loves buffalo hide, paddywhack, veggie chews, and his ostrich bone and braids.

lisaandalan · 08/12/2021 23:24

Yak stick.
Venison bone. X

PanicBuyingSprouts · 11/12/2021 15:17

Mine had Camel skin last night. She seemed very pleased with it and it lasted an hour.

ilovesushi · 11/12/2021 15:39

Our lab loves yak sticks but can chew through them in one sitting so I don't bother getting them anymore - too pricey. The only things that have any lasting power are antlers and coffee root. We did get a very expensive piece of non splintering wood from the pet shop but she had zero interest in it. Much preferred to raid the log pile behind the house and chew through that. Maybe try the antler again. Our doggo wasn't too interested until she gnawed through to the tasty bit in the middle.

dustofneptune · 12/12/2021 00:24

I second paddywhacks and camel chews / camel skin!

My dog also totally loves air-dried marrow bones. And raw bones.

Haven’t had any problems with antlers or buffalo horns. He loves them last thing at night when he’s falling asleep. During the day he just bats them around the room howling at them haha.

Dried pig tail / pig trotter seemed to be super high value to him, as he just tried to bury them and wouldn’t touch them. Which is what he does when he wants to save something for later. So might be worth a try!

Furries · 12/12/2021 01:00

Antler bone, would recommend every time. I got mine from Green & Wilds. They do various sizes, depending on size and age of breed (pretty sure they do some for fairly young pups).

They don’t go rotten like normal bones - so they don’t attract flies. They don’t go “off” so there’s no stench. And, my dog at least, had no desire to bury it like she would with a normal bone from the butchers. They look expensive, but they last for blooming ages. Out of all the things I ever bought for my girl, I’d say antler bones were definitely the best.

She sadly passed away a few nights ago, am obviously trying to post vicariously through other people’s dogs.

beancounting · 12/12/2021 07:57

Sorry to hear about your ddog @Furries Flowers

Ours loves Earth Animal chews, they come in different sizes depending on the size of dog. They are quite pricey but they seem to last him around an hour. He also likes the sticks they do but they don't last very long.
