Hi, my dog has been recently diagnosed with atlantoaxical instability, he is 2 years old and isn’t showing any symptoms yet. How likely is this to affect my dog? What are the signs to look out for?

Thank you.

You need to speak to your own vet or get a neuro referral
It's unlikely anyone can advise you on a specific case

Thank you for replying, I appreciate it @Veterinari I am waiting for my referral to the hospital, I am just wondering if you had any general information, such as if it is likely to affect him? What I would need to look out for, and how dangerous in general it is?

I appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Hopefully it won't turn out to be serious OP but these things can vary massively from individual to individual.
You should be able to get a referral appointment quickly, but in the meantime, some VERY general guidelines; watch out for any changes in your dog's coordination, foot placement, toe dragging, pain levels etc. Avoid using neck leads and minimise exercise - only out for the toilet (on a harness& lead) and back in for now. Avoid running, jumping and stairs. Monitor ability to urinate and defecate. Keep a diary of symptoms.

If your vet has given any other instructions, eg crate rest etc, then it's important to follow these strictly. And if there's anything you have more specific questions on, it's probably best to ring your own vet,
as Veterinari said above. They will be able to give you far more tailored advice depending on the exact situation.

Best of luck.
