Anyone know about canicross?

Because I was thinking we might give it a try.

I run with DDog two maybe three times a week, 30-60 minutes and she seems to like it - always raring to go. And I was wondering if getting involved with canicross might broaden her horizons a bit.

It it done mainly through clubs, and how do you find nearby ones? Do you have to be a club member to try an event?

Do you need kit, if so what's non-negotiable? At the moment we run with her in a well-fitted webbing harness and me using a waist lead with an elasticated section. Is that enough, or do I need a proper belt/lead? If so, recommendations?

TL:DR - can you signpost a good page for potential newbies?

I know a place in Notts that does Canicross coaching if that's anywhere near you

Their social media presence is good. With a lot of “ambassadors” who I’m sure can answer questions.

I barely use social media. Which platform/s do you mean, and is there anything in particular I should search for?

Not near Notts (unless visiting family, which might happen from time to time)

Our local one is mainly through facebook.

What areas are you interested in?

A proper harness for the dog helps / is essential. Also a good idea to have a proper belt for you to spread the weight across your hips. Lots of clubs have kit bags which you can borrow from, to find your fit. dogfit.co.uk/pages/canicross-kit or www.k9trailtime.com

What dog have you got?

Thank you for the links.

DDog's harness isn't sold specifically for canicross, but it's an unusual make for this country, low cut so no airway issue, and was properly fitted (so no problems with shoulder action). She's under 6kg I really don't think we'll need sturdier!!

The elasticated section on the existing lead is, I think, enough for a terrier of her weight, but it might be worth trying out a belt, and if we get one of those we'll need a new lead anyway!

Grin yep at 6kg she is going to need light weight equipment. Benefit is that is cheaper, downside is she won't pull you up hills.

Our local group is www.wessexcanicross.com if you search 'canicross near me' you should find one local to you.

Canicross trailrunners on Facebook, they have a list of clubs.

I run my local Canicross group, if you are in Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire or Essex I can let you know the local ones.

K9 trail time website will help you select a suitable harness, if you let me know her breed I can suggest types that may suit.

Basic equipment is a harness for your dog, a waist belt for you and a bungee lead to connect them.
