What are your dog's special quirks?

Specific to them? My Border Collie Skye is such a weirdo. A loveable one, but definitely a weirdo! Some of the things she does:

When she has a drink, she paces her right paw up and down. I think instinctive behaviour from her puppyhood when she was nursing from her mum!
When she's finished her kibble and it's time for her biscuits, she'll follow you to the dog treat cupboard pawing your heels like a kitten with a ball of wool.
She'll scratch at the door to go out, and when you go and open it she'll change her mind and turn away.
When she is outside, she'll curl up in a tiny tight ball on the grass, conserving her last hint of body heat, instead of going in her nice kennel with the mattress and thick fleecey blanket. She's also welcome to come in the house whenever she wants, she just often prefers to suffer alone out in the cold/dark/wet.
She'll affectionately bite your nose, and when you exclaim in pain, bite it again, by way of apology. She's 9 now and has never learned to, you know, just stop biting in the first place!
If a dog runs up to her suggesting they play, she'll either ignore or acts like she's afraid of them, but when a dog is having a good time with another dog or its owner she'll bound up and intrude!
When she's having a false pregnancy she'll abandon her nice comfy dog bed and squeeze in the tiny gap behind the sofa - what better place to have puppies than a hardwood floor in a narrow space with no bedding or access to water?! She'll also try to squeeze down badger holes in that mode as well. I think the badgers would be pretty pissed off to find she'd turned their sett into a nursery!
She'll evade the towel but rub against the wall when she's wet instead. Aaahh, that highly absorbent painted stonework.
She's so entirely spoiled she always gets a present whenever we have any. She knows what to expect and lies down and whines at us as soon as we've finished singing Happy Birthday.

I just love her, she's the best! What makes your pup stand out from the crowd?

Hi. I am not sure I have any quirks to share other than usual puppy behaviour. But it was nice to read about your dog and she sounds quite similar to mine I have a border collie too. She curls up at the back door watching the world, but prefers to have door open and fresh air on her face, which is really frustrating in the winter! She does occasionally lie on the cold back step (concrete) instead now instead of Coming in to the warmth!

Goawayangryman · 01/12/2021 15:41

Ours sleeps on Cold hard floors out of choice.
She also always requires some of the rabbits' nuggets when they are being fed, and also some of their hay. I'm not sure this is good for her but never mind....

Santaischeckinglists · 01/12/2021 15:48

Ddog sleeps like this and we are expected to step over her..

What are your dog's special quirks?
Pickles89 · 01/12/2021 21:11

@Santaischeckinglists

Haha! I wish Skye would let me do that! If she's lying near a doorway, not blocking it or anything, but vaguely close, she'll leap to her feet and move away as if you were going to kick her clear across the room if she didn't!! Makes you feel terrible!

I have a BC who won't go out in the rain unless it involves getting in the car and will only sleep on the bed and hogs the fire. I have a RC who will lie outside in the rain and snow if we would let her. The BC is also a back seat driver!!!

FizzyTango · 01/12/2021 22:08

Oh gosh too many anecdotes to think of. I have a GSD who likes things to be JUST SO. We must stick to the routine!! In the evenings I get herded up to bed which I love. My partner works very late at his desk (academia) so I love my nightly cuddles with my boy. My partner sleeps in to adjust for going to bed late so he gets the morning snuggles.
He is very opinionated about how to be stroked so he will lean on you/reverse into you/paw at you to get you to stroke or scratch the right part of his body. If I sit on the floor/kneel to get something he will immediately sit on my lap 😅. He is a very very needy dog who wants to be loved at all opportunities. And I don’t mind one bit!

Goawayangryman · 01/12/2021 22:20

@FizzyTango he sounds awesome.

I've thought of another one about mine. She detests the bath except when I am in it and then she comes and kind of... Paddles her front paws in it. I don't know how to describe it. It's like she is trying to run with her front paws in the water. Back feet stay on the floor, outside the bath.

Pickles89 · 01/12/2021 22:46

I've thought of another one! When out on a walk and you're throwing a ball for her, she doesn't avidly watch the ball like a normal dog, but keeps her back to you and looks at where she thinks the ball should go! I swear her brain was just put together in a random order, like the skeleton of the dog in 'Funnybones'!

@FizzyTango I WISH Skye would snuggle with me! My last dog would for hours, and stretch out in the bed to the point I was perched on the edge and fell out a couple of times! Skye is just not interested. She'll just fidget and jump down and scratch at the door if I try. She does hugs on her own terms, and they're lovely (she'll drape a paw over each shoulder and push her cheek against yours) but she'd never let you just sit and stroke her and snuggle up against you. If I lie down next to her on the floor she'll inwardly sigh and roll her eyes and go and lie somewhere else! It's like she hasn't read the dog books that explain she's actually of wolf lineage, and therefore a social pack animal!

My BC is just a freak, but I absolutely love him.
He spins and spins when people are getting ready to leave, and snaps to bite as he spins. Not me though, since I'm his fave human he never spins for me. Its not as exciting when I leave since he misses me, obviously Grin

He also rounds the cats out and my oldest cat especially, he doesn't agree that he should even be allowed in the house. He stands over him and just stares waiting for any kind of movement in the hopes that the movement means he wants to go back out. He then races to me to stare and to tell me to let the cat out, then races back to stare at the cat who is innocently just sleeping.

He also does this same thing when he wants to go out himself, but with the door. Only he doesn't actually wants to go out. He just wants to keep me active. I open the door, he darts out, spins and then runs back in and looks at me as if to say "what are you waiting for? Shut the door!"

He also tries to guess my next moves, which 9 put of 10 times he is correct. But I feel bad for the times I'm not actually getting up and just moving in my seat and he has startled himself awake and pretty much flew across the room expecting me to get up because any second away from me just isn't allowed!

Avarua · 01/12/2021 23:13

My mini schnauzer will NOT go outside in the rain. He's as stubborn as fuck and I adore him.

Avarua · 01/12/2021 23:14

He follows me everywhere. When I'm in the bathroom with the door shut he puts his nose under the door and sniffs and huffs.
This sort of thing was really annoying when my children did it when small but somehow with my dog it's totally adorable.

Imdoingitnow · 01/12/2021 23:37

My 8 month black lab pup chews the ears off every teddie he has then he proceeds to de- brain them

StillMedusa · 02/12/2021 00:28

Mine ignores her expensive dog beds in favour of lying bellly up against the walls!
HAS to come with me to the bathroom, and if I have a bath she sits with her nose over the edge to make sure I don't go down the plughole.
Hates Pugs...

My son has a staff who hates the rain
He point blank refuses to go out to pee if it’s raining
He’s been known to hold it for over 24 hours which can’t be healthy for him
He has this habit of walking really nicely, and when he’s had enough he’ll just lay down and have a snooze
I cannot say how many times I’ve been stood in the street, waiting on a snoring staff to wake up and carry on our walk
I love it when he’s with his mates down at the park-he’ll be running around, acting the loon and he’ll just turn and give you the biggest grin before hurling himself towards another dog

My mates dog will go out for a pee on a night but refuse to come back in
The only way she can get him in is to stand there with a sausage in each hand while shouting ‘Gary!’ (in the style of Del Boy) at him (he’s not called Gary)
Oddly he won’t answer to Gary any other time!

Giggorata · 02/12/2021 01:09

Lab #1 sings happily into her dinner bowl as she eats. She is wild about swimming and has a daily dip in the river. When we were away, she suddenly caught sight of the sun glinting off a pond 100 yards away and ran towards it for a swim. She also jumped into a slutty pit once, in the absence of any other water 🤮
Lab #2 also taps her paw when drinking, keeps her own nails trimmed by biting and gets visibly offended if strangers try to stroke her.
Huge Shepherd pup is too young for real eccentricities, but sleeps upside down and has learnt to open doors, worse luck.

Thelikelylass · 02/12/2021 01:11

My dog slides into the room like Kramer in 'Seinfeld'.

Ulelia · 02/12/2021 01:18

We had a guide dog in training who had to keep coning back for more training as he refused to go out in the rain (NOT useful for a guide dog Wink) and would hold off going for a week for a whole day if needed. Loved swimming and paddling, just not water from the sky. Our current Guide dog puppy is adorable but really hates people except ones she's bonded with. It means she'll be a good dog as she won't get distracted, but the look on her poor, long suffering face when someone wants to stroke her is a picture. She'll do anything to get away!

Ulelia · 02/12/2021 01:19

*hold off going for a wee, that should say.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 02/12/2021 01:22

One wanders round with a flamingo in his mouth, and if he drops it, will stare at it until you put it in his mouth again.

The other barks loudly if you ask if he is a puffer fish.

Neither are particularly bright 😂

Rno3gfr · 02/12/2021 01:29

Yes! I adore my Coker Spaniel puppy. She’s an absolute softie to everyone; strangers, children, other dogs. But she howls, cries and “talks” in any situation if not given attention by other strangers or their dogs if nearby and in an enclosed space! It a a bit embarrassing!

Pickles89 · 02/12/2021 01:49

Hahahaha, these are wonderful!

I remember my last colie would go mad if my mum started speaking French. Xenophobic clearly!

Our little guy becomes irrational and downright ornery in the rain. Yesterday he pretended to head towards our apartment building door, then turned quickly, headed onto the front bit of grass where he is not allowed to poo, and pooed.

The little rascal. He escaped crossing the road in the rain.

I swear he talks to me. If I cuddled and say good dog he makes a little noise in his throat. So sweet.

KosherDill · 02/12/2021 02:05

My little Chihuahua loves the snow, even if it's neck deep.

If I stop rubbing his tummy he'll kick at me and if that doesn't work he'll lift his head & give me a baleful look till I resume the rub.

He won't even look at a toy, though, which makes me sad.

Bashfulinseduary · 02/12/2021 03:53

We have a rescue pit mix (not in the UK). When we got he she didn't know how to walk in a lead and was really reactive to dogs/cats/squirrels/falling leaves. Lots of training later she has lovely walking manners. But if she sees a dog/cat/squirrel she will now stare at you until you give her scritches. Sometimes I only know a cat is near cos she grins and wags at me, so pleased to be a good girl. We do occasionally see alligators in our walks. I've never tried to stop her barking at them, I want to know where those bastards are.
