Itchy & Scratchy

I wonder if anyone can help. My little stafford is incredibly itchy. She is flea'd & wormed each month and has been checked for fleas by the vet but there is no sign of them. She has periton daily as advised by the vet and has oatmeal baths. Have just started using 'non stinky stuff' both as an application and in her feed and so far, no improvement. The vet has said that they won't prescribe steroids until she is older - she is 6 months.

Is the next step blood tests for allergies? Is there anything else I can try?

She seems so uncomfortable :-(

Thanks

What's her diet like?

Veterinari · 29/11/2021 20:13

Blood tests for allergies aren't especially reliable.
A strict diet trial on a hypoallergenic food should be the next step

She is on a mixed diet of kibble and wet food from tails.com. Should I change her to something else? She is a happy wee hound but the itching must be driving her mad :(

Yes a hypoallergenic diet trial for 6-8 weeks. Discuss it with your vet first

I know the blood tests aren’t deemed reliable but we eventually did them as a last resort. Cut out chicken and beef (we already fed raw). Amazing difference.
Our dermatologist also said we could try a strict raw diet starting with a novel protein. So one she hadn’t had before.
Also think about environmental issues such as air fresheners and cleaning liquids.
Good luck!!

It sounds a food allergy.Wheat is usually the culprit.did the vet not mention a possible food allergy?

Indoctro · 29/11/2021 22:20

Same happened to my now 11 month Staffie at around the same age

Chicken is a regular culprit

I put him on salmon and veg hypoallergenic food from Millie's Wolfheart and coatex supplements and it's disappeared

Try fish as it's the least of the food culprits

Stay away from eggs too

My friend has been through this with her dog, and switching to raw has helped. She's still working through the process of figuring out which protein/s is/are triggering it.

She is still feeding non-raw treats and chews though, which could also be an issue.

It could be worth looking into?

So sorry your poor pup is going through this!

Thanks all; I will speak to the vet and get some hypoallergenic food. I’ll look into the coated supplements as well :)

We have a staffy cross who has food allergies. She is on grain free and is allergic to chicken, tripe and egg. We find the best food is salmon based kibble.
If she has had anything remotely chickeny, her ears will start itching first, then she will start licking her paws.
I'm surprised the vet didn't look at her diet to be honest.

Pollymollydolly · 01/12/2021 23:56

We were advised to give evening primrose oil with piriton- apparantly makes it more effective.

Hope you find something that works for her, allergies are horrible.

AwkwardPaws27 · 04/12/2021 21:16

Has she had a skin scrape to rule out mites?
