Our chocolate Lab is 5 months old and about 50% of the time he is leaving a couple of poos and a wee in the kitchen overnight.

There doesn't seem to be any patterns when we have a dry night.
He eats the same, exercises the same, taken out the same amount of times before we go up to bed at 11:30ish.

He is our first dog....is this something that will improve naturally as he grows or is there something we can do to help him?

Until about 6 months I set an alarm for 3 am and took dpuppy out for a wee!! Then she outgrew her crate and she went from 11 - 6 no problem after that.

I get up at 5:45 to check the kitchen and clean if needed asDS2 dies soaker round and I don't want him to have to deal with it.

Funnily enough I woke at 2:30 last night and came down to let him out for a poo/wee but he would t do anything 🙄

It could be habit & the puppy thinking it’s ok.

We have a 6 month old puppy. When we first got her we introduced her to her crate, fed her in there, had her bed in there, but didn’t shut the door. Most nights she was clean by about 4 months but then she regressed & I suspected she’d got into the habit of relieving herself at about 5am. Circumstances meant that we had to move her crate. It was originally in the kitchen but we were having a new kitchen fitted. There was no way I wanted to clean the carpet every morning so I shut the crate door. She didn’t object & she’s been clean every night since.

Mine was let out in the night regularly until about six months. If nobody is letting him out and he needs to go he has no choice but to go on the floor.

I would use a baby monitor or similar so you can hear him wake and hopefully get there in time to let him out.

Also make sure you're using the proper pet enzyme cleaner for the floor.

You might already have done this, but give the last feed much earlier, so it can be 'eliminated' by bedtime. Also, are you going out with him for his last trip out before bed and ensuring he goes (I mean, not just putting him out in the garden and hoping)? With my puppies I usually take them out around 4 hours after lights out as well. How long this middle of the night trip out is needed depends very much on the dog. My current puppy has only just stopped needing it at 7 months (most of the time anyway). However, I also have the puppy in the room with me so I can tell if they get fractious and need to go out.
The only other thing I can think of is - he's not getting any extra food unknown to you in the form of treats?

Not a habit dogs would much rather be asleep than waking themselves up to poo. They will stop when they are bigger.

2 choices really.

Leave things as they are and it will just stop as the dog gets bigger.

Have a camera recording and see what time of night the dog does the poo and wee and set alarm to get them out before this time. So it seems to be beween 2.40 and 5.45?

If the dog is not pooing or weeing in the day time then this is not affecting house training.

How many poos does the dog do in a 24 hour period?

Re feeding I would disagree with feeding earlier and would actually suggest feeding later so the dog can last until the morning!

Ask 100 Mn and get 100 different answers Smile

Thanks all.
HollyRoo your idea of a camera is a good one!!

It's nice to hear some reassuring comments regarding he will grow out of it (vet reiterated this !)

I will plan to wake at 4 tomorrow or next day to see if I can intercept night time poo/wees!!
Having said that, DH does early mornings on the weekend and it will probably be totally clear for him..... some skulduggery afoot I think 🤔
