Dog Sitting - cost for a sitter in your home

Trying the gauge the average cost of having a dog sitter care for my dogs in my house.

Two Labradors, who require one walk a day.

What is the going rate where you live per 24 hour period and any extra costs for bank holidays/extras?

I'm in the North West.

Hi, I'm North West and I'm a dog walker/sitter.

Assuming your dogs are happy being left for a few hours while I do my other jobs, I would be charging £45 per 24h of care, which would include one hour walk. Any extra walks would be charged at my normal rate which is £17 per hour for two dogs.

I don't work bank holidays as a rule but if I do decide to work them, I don't charge any extra for them.

£45 per 24h / night sounds very cheap , minimum wage + is more realistic

Depends if you need them to stay in the house overnight. The sitter we use (for the cat) comes in 4 times a day for dogs, before 8.30am, 10 mins walk or garden and feed, picks them up around midday for a walk (40 mins) pops in 5 ish to feed and let out, then back around 10 for a 20 mins bedtime walk. She charges £30 a day for that.

I charged £25 a night in my home and £35 in homeowners home to include 1 walk a day and extra walks £10 + £5 per extra dog

Great, gives me an idea. Many thanks all.

If I was to charge my hourly rate per 24h of care, it would be £240 a day.

People aren't going to pay those prices - you have to be realistic. Plus, I'm not there the whole time - I go out, walk my regular dogs which earns me around £100 per day on top of my overnight charge. I also go home to sort my own animals out and to shower etc.

We pay £25 per night in the Southeast. It seems to be fairly average. I don't know anyone who pays more. They can still do other jobs during the day. We just ask our dog isn't left more than 4 hours on her own and walked once a day for an hour or so.

£30 a full day here (not overnight ).

Allthatglittersandgold · 26/11/2021 07:36

Yes, it's for a 24 hour period which means overnight.

It varies then...

It will depend on lots of things - the area, number of dogs, whether they include walks or not, whether they stay overnight or not (some don't and just provide early morning and late night visits), whether your dogs can be left at all, how much other work the sitter can fit in around your dogs etc.

I wouldn't take a job if the dogs couldn't be left for 4 hours at a time as it would mean losing money - unless the owner was willing to cover my loss of daily earnings which is easily over £100 per day, which I doubt lol.

It's also worth noting that people who sit dogs in your home don't need insurance or a license so I suspect some of the cheaper ones don't have any kind of insurance or first aid training etc. and while that's not illegal it's quite a risk to take if something goes wrong.
