Help! Limping dog

Brightonpierrot · 25/11/2021 07:36

My little JRT (age 6) developed a little limp after doing crazy zoomies and then chasing a squirrel a couple of weeks ago. Then the limp disappeared but now it’s back and really bad (struggling at times to get up).
I am taking to vet but cant get an appointment for a few days so resting him at home.
He had cruciate surgery last march on the other back leg and i’m worried sick this cruciate now gone.
I really dont want him to have surgery again. Anyone with experience of having cruciate surgery on both legs?
Thanks for any advice. This is v upsetting.

Bump for you. Hopefully someone with experience of cruciate surgery on both legs will come along.

My advice would be to video your dog’s limp to show the vet, in case he hides it during the appointment.

Our lab tore her cruciate ligament, but she was 9 and we went for the conservative rest approach rather than surgery.

18 months later, the other side went. Again, she had 6 weeks of crate rest and lead walks afterwards. She went on to live very happily until 13.

One for the vet. Good luck.

Unfortunately once one has gone and been repaired it’s more likely the other side will need doing. Hoping that’s not the case.

Thanks so much for the replies. Good idea @Happenchance I will video him.
I am hoping this leg can be cured by conservative rest rather than an op as i am not wildly happy about his operated leg (it doesnt seem entirely the right shape). I am worried they operate the other one and he ends up with 2 weak misshapen legs. Also the whole op and recuperation was fairly ghastly. The aftercare from the vet was rubbish. I ended up finding a good freelance animal physio in the end.

It’s just so upsetting to see him struggling and hobbling. Ive got a vet appointment on saturday morning. Meanwhile all i can do is rest him at home I guess.
