My neighbour has just complained about my dog barking - what can I do?

Just met my neighbour for the first time. She moved in with her family in late summer. She seems very nice.

They go to bed early and get up early. She has said that they do hear my dog barking when I let her in the garden at 10pm-ish to go to the loo. She does bark a bit but she's not out for too long - 5 mins.

She also said during the day, when I occasionally let her out in the garden, she sometimes barks - but this is probably due to traffic / people that goes past our house.

I will let my dog out at around 9pm so hopefully that should stop the evening disruption.

I want to be a good neighbour - what practical tips can you give me to stop my dog barking? She's 7 months old

@WeAllHaveWings

I have a puppy who will hopefully grow out of it but training will hopefully help

They dont grow out of it, if anything it becomes an ingrained habit if you allow it. Training or not giving them the opportunity is the only way to stop them, if they are 7 months old it is already a habit that needs to be corrected.

^ this, 100%.

Repeated behaviours will be repeated in future. You've got to break the pattern or remove the opportunity.

my neighbours complained that my dog barked in the garden at 11 pm, so i went down the garden with her, problem solved.

Why is your dog barking?
Assuming it's to come back inside, you need to respond more quickly.
Or you need to be out there with her to distract from barking

@Clymene

And it's fine to engage with your neighbour. Barking dogs are bloody annoying.

When our dog was still young, we took her outside on the lead for her toilet needs. That way, she knew what we were out there for and didn’t bark. You can also train them to go on command, which can be handy.

Reading this and I can’t believe no one has stated the obvious, get off your lazy a** and walk your dog properly, it’s your responsibility deal with it, letting your dog into garden isn’t walking your damm dog, nobody likes noise help prevent it by walking your dog, if u can’t handle the responsibility of walking your dog then get rid of the dog

I take my dog out on a lead for her last wee and for whatever reason it stops her barking (she's not hugely barky though)
