Does anybody have one? My grown up son’s friend’s bully had pups two months ago and my son has offered to buy me one. I have seen photos and they are adorable, but their mum looks….well scary. 🥺 I have been assured that she’s not at all and have done some research, which tells me that they have had any aggressive behaviours intentionally bred out of them and are fantastic family dogs, but I am still a little bit dubious as I look after my toddler grandson 3 days a week. Can anyone reassure me that bullys are indeed good with children like I am being told.

PinkSyCo , so now that you are ready for a new dog, what breed do you really want to get?
What breeds were your previous dogs?

Sorry I have only just seen this. Soo I am still dogless and still trying to decide on what breed I’d like. Two of my previous dogs were Jack Russells and two were Heinz 57s and I must say the mixed breeds were the best dogs ever! Jack’s were lovely too but could be very stubborn and quite hard to train.
So I don’t care what the dog looks like-though preferably not huge-but I would really love one that doesn’t shed much (I have got used to having a nice fur free home for once!) Apart from that I want a gentle, playful, family friendly dog who would be happy with one long walk or two shorter walks per day. One of my son’s really wants a greyhound and when I’ve done those online ‘which dog is right for me?’ tests the Italian greyhound has come up as my perfect match, but the fact that greyhounds break their legs easily would make me too nervous I think. So now I am thinking some kind of poodle cross or just a plain old poodle. I just don’t know though. Help!

Hi, just wanted to jump on and say something about rescues as you said you have had issues finding one willing to re-home to you? (Correct me if I'm wrong).

Hi I haven’t actually tried to adopt for the same reason I didn’t get a Bully really, which is as I care for my small grandsons while parents work I need to make sure the dog is of the right temperament to be around children.

We had an oversize bully when I was a teenager. Gorgeous dog. Wonderful with my sister's children. Not great with other dogs or cats, but we had a well-fenced garden and Dad taught our dog well. He was a good house-dog, although untrustworthy with bacon if it was around. He guarded, but appropriately - he woke dad up when there was a prowler, and he wouldn't let the strange man near my sister. (Shame it was the doctor, but our lovely boy was very firm that no strange man was touching her....)

One of the best dogs we ever had although I never felt my DH would make a good bully owner, so when our turn came to have dogs I made sure we had an "easy" breed.

A Poodle would be great choice. Low shedding, trainable, healthy, available in 3 different sizes. Please factor in the cost of regular professional clipping (not prohibitive, by the way) and look forward to many years of happy dog companionship! Please do some research and find a good, kind, responsible breeder though, the breed clubs are a great place to start, details on the KC website and most club secretaries will be happy to chat.

I bet 99% of these Karens that are being negative dont even own a dog never mind an XL Bully dog. If you've never owned one or had experience of them then you cant comment.
Ive had lots of different breed of dogs over the years, bt I can honestly say XLs are THE best breed to have around kids. they adore kids and are so happy when just trotting around behind a child!! As long as they have training not to jump and basic manners around small people then you are good to go.

@PinkSyCo My friend has one. She is good with my friend’s children and with the family. She’s very protective and sleeps on the bed of the youngest child.

However, she is careful with visitors as the dog is so protective. The dog is not a fan of strangers entering the home unless she has seen them enter with one of the family. Her children are now older (13 & 16) so there are no screaming kids. Her dog has become excited by one of her sons friends who was scared and started flapping a bit, she had to tell the boy to either calm it or leave.

The only thing I would say is that if you are scared of the full grown version - that doesn’t bode well. Your pup won’t be a pup for long…. I’d never have a dog I was scared of or didn’t fully trust. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I certainly wouldn't leave my toddler son in the same house as a dog like that. It's one of the reasons I wouldn't trust him with his aunty, she has an aggressive dog breed.

Our dog walker has one. He is the loveliest friendliest dog. My daughter and our little pug LOVE him. My daughter keeps asking if he could stay with us. He really is a lovely and very friendly dog, but he was brought up around many dogs and a very experienced owner.

After yet another person was recently tragically killed by a XL bully I just want to thank those who advised me against having one. I am currently still dogless, but definitely hope to rectify that situation next year. 😊
