Advice on dry food please

Hi
We’ve just rehomed a 6month old pup from a charity that specialises in rehoming dogs from Croatia. We’ve been told to feed her chicken and rice to settle her tummy after the stresses of transporting and new home and then to feed her good quality dry food. They recommended 1 brand but the dogs haven’t had it and it isn’t widely available so we’ve been looking into other choices but feel overwhelmed by choice!
Which dry food would you (and your pup) recommend?

Have a look on www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/
We use millies wolf heart which we buy on line.

bingohandjob · 18/11/2021 07:26

We use Guru and our pup loves it - devours it! Seems to work really well for him - lovely coat, good regular firm poos!

Mine has Eden dry dog food - I buy the "working dog" one in 15kg sacks as it's exactly the same as their standard mix (I've checked the ingredients and composition) but 20% cheaper! It's 80% meat and fish, and 20% fruit and veg, with no grains. So although it's not the cheapest, it's very energy dense. Dog is super shiny and does small easy-to-pick-up poos Grin so I'm happy with it!

We started using Royal canin medium dog puppy food as that was what he was eating at the rescue and then after some trial and error, he is now on lilys kitchen which he loves. Their wet food is good too x
Definitely recommend the website a pp said... really helpful to balance up cost with decent food x

I have used Burns and Harringtons before.

icedcoffees · 18/11/2021 08:17

We use Harringtons which I know doesn't rate amazingly but it's the only food he'll eat daily without getting fussy and refusing meals.

His poo is small and firm so it can't be all bad - the vet says he's in great health too.

However I do mix it with their wet food which rates much, much higher in terms of quality so maybe that makes a difference.

I buy in bulk off their website and it costs me around £30 a month.

cupatay · 18/11/2021 12:19

I use Arden Grange - for no particular reason than it's mid-level quality and £30-ish for a 12kg sack. It's also the one the rescue were using that we got him from. My dog loves the Fish 4 Dogs samples provided by the rescue and they look very high quality, but that's twice the price so can't afford.

Another vote for Millie's Wolfheart and Eden. We change between them so the dog doesn't get bored.

Good quality, gluten free, not harsh on the stomach etc. It's expensive but worth it, and you feed less of it too.

MaddieElla · 18/11/2021 12:32

Also the working dog versions are tax free, hence 20% cheaper. Bargain.

nannybeach · 18/11/2021 12:34

Nothing fancy here after the puppy stage. We have a Phalene,at a pup,we had to feed him beef mince raw,but it had to be frozen 3 days to remove bugs, then thawed. Now he gets Lidl dog foils,he's nearly 16.my last dog a border collie 17, Lidl dry and moist semi dry.

hoochyhooha · 18/11/2021 12:41

Another one for millies wolf heart, gosh @MaddieElla didn't know that about the working dog food. Top tip.
A good thing to if you change food also is to gradually add new food to old, not to change all at once, otherwise the poor dog gets diarrhoea Sad

youreabeluga · 18/11/2021 12:53

Another vote for Eden or Millie's Wolfheart if you can afford it.

I wouldn't bother with the chicken and rice either personally!

StrawberryFizz26 · 18/11/2021 12:54

AATU - it is expensive but worth it IMO

mrsSOAK · 18/11/2021 19:57

Thank you all for your suggestions, I guess it will be a bit of trial and error before we find the right one for her but at least I have a better idea where to look

We also use Eden - our dog LOVES it. It does look expenisve, but it is very high in meat content and therefore energy dense - the recommended portion size for my dog now is 240g a day, vs >700g for the cheaper food she was previously on.

GuyFawkesDay · 19/11/2021 18:51

Another Eden feeder here. Recommended to us by raw food shop as the best dry out there. Pup has thrived on it.

Cagedbirdsinging · 20/11/2021 02:09

When my fourteen week old Jack Russell came to me she was happily established in Eukanuba dry puppy kibble . One evening a few weeks later I gave her a little of what I was having - roast lamb , steamed carrots and cabbage . She wouldn't look at dry food after that .
I'll put Harringtons Wetpouch 150th in her dish if I'm cooking something for myself not suitable for her , but she rarely eats it ; she'll hold out for freshly cooked , warm meat and vegetables ! She's really healthy and surprisingly muscular .

DBI78 · 20/11/2021 08:29

AVA is good nutritionally

GuyFawkesDay · 20/11/2021 10:12

AVA comes in at about 73% on AADF.
Wolfworthy, Eden, Millie's Wolfheart and others mentioned upthread do come in higher rated, nutritionally.

FazedNotPhased · 20/11/2021 10:42

I do Barking Heads puppy days. If it didn't suit, I'd switch to Eden or Millie's.

Butchers wet food is incredibly highly rated and cheap, so I'll probably start using that mixed in for variety when he's a bit bigger.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 20/11/2021 22:43

My v fussy terrier only likes Crave which i think is probably average quality but he likes it and it sorts out his v dodgy stomach. He also has some soft food (Butchers.)
