'At least he can protect you'

Out walking the GSD on the pavements, I stood aside with dog on 'wait' command as I saw two elderly people approaching. Elderly man went past, very nicely smiled at me then at GSD. Elderly lady went past, smiled at me, then at GSD, then said 'beautiful dog', I said 'thank you', but then she said 'well, at least he can protect you'.

Protect me from what? Is there something she knows that I don't?! It freaked me out! And what is 'at least' about it? Scared now!!

Maybe she felt protected because she was with her dh. And was thinking your ddog is up for the job too! Woman out in her own and all that!! My mil never ever went anywhere without fil.
Until he died and she travelled all over!

VsgKitt · 17/11/2021 14:42

It's quite obvious isn't it? Many people get large dogs for protection. From muggings, attacks etc.

number87inthequeue · 17/11/2021 14:44

Where I live loads of people have small fluffy dogs that they carry around half the time. A few people have commented on what a shame it is for me that my dog is too big to be carried/cuddled. someone should tell him that I wonder if they mean this by the 'at least'? I think the protection comment is just them thinking out loud that your dog might scare off an intruder etc (rather than any specific thing they think you need protecting from).

Beautifulday345 · 17/11/2021 14:45

Yeah, it’s obvious, she may feel quite vulnerable out and about on her own… with your GSD, your protected. It’s in their nature to protect their owners from harm, so she would be right too

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 17/11/2021 14:45

You’re being silly OP. GSD are known for having a natural protective instant, many people use them as guard dogs. That’s all she meant.

Scrunchies · 17/11/2021 14:46

Surely as a GSD owner you must be familiar with this attitude? I get it all the time with mine and always have done. Also they really are very ‘protective’ breeds - shepherds in nature!

WickedWitchOfTheTrent · 17/11/2021 14:58

I think you might be overthinking this. I suspect she was being nice and making conversation.

Lots of people get dogs to make them feel safer, out on walks or in the house. I've got 3, if anyone tries to break in they'd shit themselves as their barking can sound very aggressive, in reality and thief would get licked to death

Arabelladrinkstea · 17/11/2021 15:00

I have this lot with my Dobermann….. I laugh and tell them she’d run away and cower 🤣

Moonface123 · 17/11/2021 15:07

Just take it with the intention it was given, as in a compliment.

someone should have explained that to my giant chihuahua (also known as a German Shepherd). My boy could have sworn he was a lap dog 🤣
chocolateicefan · 17/11/2021 15:13

I know she was being nice just from her whole demeanour. But it was just the 'at least' bit. Almost like well there's a lot that's disadvantageous about him but at least he can protect you. Perhaps she just meant that they look like big and strong beasts to manage and I'm quite small so it would be a natural thing to say.

UnoriginalPenguin · 17/11/2021 16:41

Maybe she was saying that your DDog was more use than her DH Grin

TheMooch · 17/11/2021 16:49

She probably just said the 1st thing that popped into her head from her own experiences. Overthinking.

People stereotype dogs from GSD, Cockerpoos, Terriers, greyhounds....

Wolfiefan · 17/11/2021 16:52

I have a friend who said if the zombie apocalypse happens she wants my wolfhounds to protect her. I had to say they would shove her in front of them like a human shield and run away from the trouble.

Leonberger · 17/11/2021 18:14

People say this to me all the time too.

I bet you never get any trouble is one I’ve heard many times. Funnily enough no I haven’t Grin

German Shepherds are highly intelligent and obedient, as well as protective of their owners. It's what they are known for.

It was a harmless comment. Get a grip.

I think she meant it as 'at least he is good enough to sit and therefore be protective' GSD get a bad rap and when they are well trained as yours is then people sometimes dont know what to say.
