Would it be unwise to teach my dog to kiss feet?

She is a very licky dog and desperately wants to show affection by licking visitors. Her preference would be to jump up and lick faces. Which is obviously unacceptable . She also licks hands, legs, feet anywhere really. I was thinking I could get her to lick feet as an acceptable greeting? I know it’s not ideal but would divert her attention from jumping and visitors don’t seem to mind this as much. She is out of control with excitement and frantic licking when people come round

No, that's really not appropriate.

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/11/2021 09:34

No.
No licking, anywhere.

@Kopfy

Thanks maryandgerrylivinginderry this is what I would imagine would be a good plan for our dog. Can you remember did you treat her with food to stay on her mat? I can’t decide if this is complicating matters and the reward should just be to come say hello
Yes I used treats, but I also trained her to go to the spot randomly, so she didn’t just associate it with the excitement of people arriving. It means any time I need to contain her for any reason I can say “go to your spot” and she does without getting excited because it could just mean she’s getting a treat or someone’s at the door or mum is mopping.

Try not to worry though or feel bad-your dog is still a pup! There’s an amazing Facebook group to read guides on training, by experts. You can ask questions only after you’ve read the guides, which cover a lot. It’s called dog training advice and support and had a little illustrated person with dog, and green speech bubble on the profile.

I have looked at dog training advice and support but they say for four on the floor you teach by chopping up sausage and rewarding when four on the floor. But she completely understands sitting nicely for treats. This is a different scenario altogether and I couldn’t find anything in the guides for it.

A toy to present guests with? Our rottweiler use for show off her newly caught sock!!

mummabubs · 17/11/2021 09:59

I'm a dog owner and dog lover. Don't do this.

Djifunrsn · 17/11/2021 10:02

OP I don’t have any practical support for you but I do have moral support. My dog loves licking people (he’s a lap dog). He licks me, dh and the teens if they let him. He also licks my mum and brothers when they come round. He isn’t interested in licking people he doesn’t know though.

Taking a toy to show is possibly an option but she really kind of jams it into your leg while chewing it which I feel has a potential for a accidentally nipping the person
