High value, no mess training treats

My very fussy toy poodle seems to have gone off her biscuit treats. Her recall is great so long as she has a decent treat to make it worth her while.

Does anyone have any ideas for training treats that are irresistible but not messy/wet like hot dogs/fresh chicken? I want to be able to take them on long park walks but ideally not have a slimy hand at the end of it.

Try the training treats from JRPetProducts.

I buy these for my dog walking business. They're just dried duck/chicken/salmon whatever - they don't smell but all the dogs I walk absolutely love them. One bag of treats lasts me a week and I walk 8-10 dogs a day :)

I get a pack of Earls Meaty Strips from Aldi and break them up into little bits. They're only cheap.
My Ddog won't entertain biscuit treats.

CMOTDibbler · 16/11/2021 16:46

Atomic drops from Treats2sit4 are like crack to my dogs, though I break up an assortment of their treats into a bag so its like pick and mix

mrsrobin · 16/11/2021 16:59

Tiny cubes of cheese - something like edam as it "stays in a cube"

tizwozliz · 16/11/2021 17:03

My lab puppy wouldn't consider the JR training treats high value when out and about. I use Arden Grange liver pate in a tube for recall.

Clymene · 16/11/2021 17:06

You can make your own liver treats. They stay firm but I keep them in the freezer and just grab a handful as and when I need them.

Meaty cat sticks (each stick breaks into 8 treats)

I use this pate from JR and cut it up into small bits, my dogs go crazy for it!

I have one of the fussiest buggers on God's green earth, and the little pellets from Barker and Barker mostly work for her.

There are messier treats that work better, but I'd you want something small and clean, these are great.

FazedNotPhased · 16/11/2021 17:48

JR pate but it's a bit slimy tbh. Like crack for them though.

MrsWooster · 16/11/2021 17:52

Tube of primula which she can lick a tiny squirt of straight from the tube. I even got crafty and added the flip top from a toothpaste tube so it was a one handed operation.

Pinkorchide · 16/11/2021 18:02

Small cubes of cheese work well for my lab. Cheddar is ok but a bit crumbly, Edam, as per pp is a good idea, might try that myself.

magicstar1 · 16/11/2021 18:08

Home Bargains do fish treats that my girl loves. They’re little pieces of salmon and you can cut them smaller if you prefer. They feel nice and dry, not smelly, but she loves them.

heidbuttsupper · 16/11/2021 18:20

Another vote for cheese here!

OompaLumpaLabrador · 16/11/2021 18:32

Parmesan. But cut into tiny cubes and left to dry out for a day or two. Or Biltong, cut into tiny cubes. That’s what I use for agility training and off lead field walks. My pockets reek.

GuyFawkesDay · 16/11/2021 18:34

Cheese cubes
Primula
JR pate in cubes
Whole meat treats so JR ones are good.

Best ones are sprats for my dog but they stink. Work SO well though.

filka · 16/11/2021 18:41

I used to use liver treats (about 25 years ago!) - the nearest recipe I can find is this:
www.bdws.co.uk/homemade-liver-treat-recipe/
When cooked/dried out the treats have almost no smell and completely dry, so are easy to put in a pocket.

The important thing to remember is that it's an obedience treat, not a meal substitute, so I used to cut into cubes of about 5mm - and that was for an Irish Wolfhound.

WeeM · 16/11/2021 18:47

These are great because they are completely odourless-my dog loves them. I get them locally in a pet shop. They’re quite pricey though pet-munchies.com/product/pet-munchies-chicken-training-treats-150g

WeeM · 16/11/2021 18:48

I should add I’m sure I pay less than that for them in the shop. B and m also do some chicken whirls which are cheaper and also really good.

RedCarsGoFaster · 16/11/2021 18:50

JR Pate is like doggy crack in this house.

My fussy sighthound cross first accepted the freeze dried chicken and nothing else when we first had her. This stuff surpasses that.

liveforsummer · 16/11/2021 19:40

Natures variety freeze dried 100% meat treats. They seem like the dog version of a wotsit (without the crumbs) so they are light as air and smell of nothing but ddog goes mad for them. The larger nuggets are a complete meal and you can break them down or buy the bite size training treats (which I still break up). It's not too expensive. I buy them in pets at home. Available in a variety of proteins

Thanks everyone! Some great ideas here. I'm going to go on a shopping spree...
