Anything for really - really! - strong chewer (eats Kong extreme)

Kind of despairing... Our lovely, friendly staffy has chewed through all of the Kong Extreme toy shapes. At first, it took days, but in the last two days he has chewed through £30 quids worth of the XL Extreme Kongs within minutes as getting even better at it - aaaahh! (And then starts to eat them, so they have to be removed straightaway). Are there any really, GENUINELY INDESTRUCTIBLE dog toys? I know there's bones, antlers etc. (and raw bones in particular were recommended to us for not splintering), but after really a plastic-y type one that will be longlasting and slightly softer on the teeth as he's an older dog. Thanks!

Why does he need to chew more than one teeth cleaning chew a day?

ShirleyPhallus · 12/11/2021 19:29

We love the kong indestructible soft toys, they’ve lasted well

Otherwise bones are good, I know you said not but we have beef knuckles and all sorts of disgusting things that keep our dog quiet

Chewing is good for dogs. It's a natural stress reliever.

Because otherwise he will turn his attentions towards soft furnishings and it also keeps him occupied as he constantly wants to be petted... an older rescue, so fairly set in his ways regarding being trained out of it.

Sorry that might have sounded off! I give my dogs one teeth cleaning chew a day. They also get lick mats at lunchtime and I do a bit of fun training with them eg choc drop in newspaper etc. I don't do chews otherwise.

Grin not really what OP is asking is it Grin

He won't play fetch or interact with any feeding toys, apart from a bit of tug. Just wants to take whatever you give him (ball, any toy) and rip it to pieces...and then maybe eat it!

Ah yes they do get set in their ways especially rescues. My DS has a staffy who is the same. They just pet her (no kids obv)

noscoobydoodle · 12/11/2021 19:55

We have a big staffy cross who is an insane chewer. we have had success with Goughnuts (pricey but have a guarantee) although they aren't her favourite - she prefers a soft toy (or sock or shoe...).

icedcoffees · 12/11/2021 20:15

Most plastic chews are pretty easily destroyed IME.

Have you tried other long-lasting natural chews that are good for older dogs? Ostrich bones are good as they have a honeycomb interior so they're not as tough on teeth as beef bones, for example.

Our working cocker spaniel pup is a nightmare. He has had three trips to the vet for vomiting treatment after chewing/swallowing things he shouldn't. Once was his kong toy. I was sitting reading and could hear the squeaking of teeth on rubber and thought he was playing with it but when I looked he had eaten most of it.
He spends the evenings roaming looking for things to chew.
The one indestructible chew he has is deer antler. They are expensive and you won't want to lose it but worth it. I found them a bit cheaper in a local farming supply store.
The other one that is successful is the yak milk chews. Also expensive and cheaper at the farmer store. They get eaten over a period of time but he loves them and they keep him quiet and occupied for a few evenings.
He's a year old now and I'm hoping he will grow out of it. On his first holiday in Cornwall last month he was fearless in the sea and swam loads and actually lay down and slept in the evenings. It was bliss. Alas we don't live near the sea and although he gets great walks on a normal day we can't tire him out.

QueenofLouisiana · 13/11/2021 07:29

Watching with interest as we went through £20 worth of toys in 15 minutes last week (retired racing greyhound). The yak milk chew lasted a couple of days, so maybe an antler next.

Girlintheframe · 13/11/2021 07:38

We use fluff and tuff. Not sure if they have plastic type toys but they seem pretty indestructible

Bebeschitt · 13/11/2021 09:12

@FannyCann there is a dog swimming place near us, not just hydrotherapy. Seems popular with the spaniel owners! They have a big blow dryer for afterwards for the brave.
Beware of antlers. My strong chewer had hers confiscated. She went at it hard and fast and broke a tooth.
We stick to dried ears, snouts, animal bark etc..
Toy wise she isn't bothered really but loves destroying a cuddly toy. We haven't found one that is indestructible. She is a large staffy cross. They should use them as product testers. They only thing that has lasted the longest (almost a month now) is a meerkat toy - car insurance give away. His eyes and nose had to be removed and he has no stuffing in his head anymore but he is hanging on in there.

Pandemo · 13/11/2021 10:22

Definitely Goughnuts! They have a lifetime guarantee and will replace if it gets destroyed

FannyCann · 13/11/2021 11:43

@Bebeschitt that sounds the height of luxury! I was debating with a colleague at work who has a rampaging retriever puppy how muddy the owners would get if we tried to wrangle our dogs into one of those drying bags you see advertised. Always modelled by a compliant Labrador sitting obediently in the bag. Not to mention the fact that our dogs would tear the thing to shreds within minutes. Grin

Anyway now you mention it there is a water park about half an hour away from us. I might look into it for the occasional weekend outing - I might be able to watch Strictly in peace if we exhausted him enough!

And thanks for the warning about the antler - no problem so far but I will keep a check on it.

Also the plumber who came round recently works for the local big estate which has a deer park and he offered to get us some much more cheaply. But I assume these would be fresh/raw. I think they would need baking in a low oven for a long time - if I had an aga I'd probably leave them there for a week but I don't and wouldn't want the oven on for an extended time - it would end up costing more than buying them in the pet shop! On balance I don't think I'll take him up on the offer but interested if anyone else knows better?
