Puppy not sharing sticks when playing

Jinnybean · 10/11/2021 07:08

Our 4 month old golden retriever has learnt how amazing sticks are!

But when she finds one she will play for abit with another dog with it but if that dog keeps trying to take it she will bark at them.

How do I stop it? Xx

None of my dogs have ever shared sticks. They are prized possessions!
We don't really let ours play with sticks anymore in case of injury.

Soyouthought · 10/11/2021 07:22

One of mine will happily give other dogs their stick the other would rather give me up than her stick. Never thought it was a problem. She found it.

icedcoffees · 10/11/2021 07:24

It's pretty normal - sticks and balls are valuable toys to them.

The other dog should go and find its own stick and not steal hers Wink

spotcheck · 10/11/2021 07:47

The dog isn't a child who needs to be taught to share

However, teaching your dog the 'drop' command is very valuable, but start when the has something he isn't so excited over

Random789 · 10/11/2021 07:55

Dogs don't 'share'. Their play with other dogs is about jostling for possession. Provided your dog isn't being aggressive, that's fine.

If the barking is excessive you could work on that. But I don't think the aim should be the promotion of sharing.

^ This. 😂

Pumpkinsonparade · 10/11/2021 07:59

Please buy a fake rubber stick.
As a dc our ddog had a stick down her throat and out the front under her neck.
Absolutely grim.
And costly...

Anonaymoose · 10/11/2021 08:05

You shouldn't be letting your puppy play with sticks. I can't tell you how many stick injuries in throats/eyes I've seen over the years in my job. Really dangerous.
Sharing anything that goes in the mouth with other dogs is also a really bad idea. There are an increasing number of parvo outbreaks in the UK at the moment. We are having to give puppies a 3rd vaccine as several double vaxxed pups have died locally so sharing saliva is also a really bad idea.

LawnFever · 10/11/2021 08:09

Dogs treasure their favourite toys, not sharing is normal, but teach her to drop things for you, bribery with treats works Smile

As others have said, avoid real sticks, they can cause injuries.

PollyRoullson · 10/11/2021 08:11

DO not let your dog pick up sticks. Stick injuries are very very common and can be extremely serious and always expensive!

Agree a puppy will unlikely share with other dogs. Another reason to keep toys etc out of the way if you are likely to meet other dogs until you have a reliable recall or control of your dog to avoid any confrontation happening over an item any dog may have.

PollyRoullson · 10/11/2021 08:12

If your dog does pick up a stick offer a treat so they drop the stick and move on

Sweetleftfood · 10/11/2021 12:36

Sticks are possibly the only thing my one can get possessive about (and the rugby ball) I don't let him play with sticks around other dogs

Medievalist · 10/11/2021 12:42

You expect a 4 month old puppy to share....?!

And agree - sticks are dangerous and to be discouraged anyway.

Starcaller · 10/11/2021 12:44

Good for her tbh.

Jinnybean · 10/11/2021 20:23

The places we walk are full of sticks, especially atm

OP posts:
Claudia84 · 10/11/2021 20:42

Let him crack on as long as not ingesting (more likely to eat if you try to take it off him) but yeah try to get him interested in something safer to carry or at least don't throw them for him!
And absolutely as others said don't expect him to share. Why should he?!

Claudia84 · 10/11/2021 20:42

Sorry 'she'!

Floralnomad · 10/11/2021 23:40

I would walk somewhere else then or take a toy out with you to distract from the sticks before something nasty happens

JennyDune · 10/11/2021 23:52

This has vot to be a joke thread.

Who expects dogs to share sticks?

StillMedusa · 11/11/2021 00:41

We had a hefty vet bill after my puppy found a GREAT stick.. inhaled some of it and the nasty chest problems came afterwards...
Now we don't do sticks. Ever.
Just occasionally she and her doggy friend will find a stick and argue over it... the fastest wins (then I remove it!)

You can't expect a puppy to share!

muddyford · 13/11/2021 20:54

Puppies don't share. And don't let a puppy play with sticks.
