Hello

Anyone done the whole springer pup thing recently? Have one coming in mid December. Have never done the puppy thing. He is beyond cute but should I just call him unstoppable loony and be done with it?

Aww congratulations OP... and good luck GrinGrin

If he's anything like my pup ( who is now a 15 month old hooligan) then yep, accept that as a springer he'll be and unstoppable looney and be done with it! Also, be prepared for puppy blues between age 10 - 14 weeks when, not only will he be an unstoppable looney, he'll also be a crazy needle toothed land shark. I thought I was prepared but I don't think anything could have prepared me for that first month!

But I'd never be without him and he's brilliant and I love my crazy hooligan dog! Good luck and enjoy 😊 🐶

KeyboardWorriers · 08/11/2021 22:26

What they said ^^ Grin

I mean, we love him to bits, but definitely don't go near a 10-14 week (ish ) old without a padded bra on. Shock

Slobberstops · 08/11/2021 22:28

God the land shark craziness - sounds ace! I am prepared for the ups and downs. Ish. Starting point is that all will be mad and bad so everything better is great!

We have an 18 month old springer. She was a crazy bonkers puppy! Couldn’t sit still for a single snuggle!
She’s much more settled these days. Still crazy, but nowhere near as bonkers.
Having said that, she is the best dog I’ve ever had when out and about. Excellent recall, really easy to socialise, patient and so much fun.
They also make the cutest puppies, so come back and show us all the pics 🐶

Bellie99 · 08/11/2021 22:35

We're at 16 weeks and everything that's been said is true.
Doesn't stop for one minute during the day. Will not rest if anyone is not sitting on sofa with them. Shark teeth a plenty
Nervous tinkling happens when excited if bladder has more than a drop in!
However, completely motivated by food so training quickly happening and recall starting to be there.

LifeIsBusy · 08/11/2021 22:37

I loved my springer pup but now she's keeping everyone up with her phantom pregnancy howlings 😴...

I will love her again soon

KeyboardWorriers · 08/11/2021 22:41

That's a good point @Bellie99 our springer pup seems to be getting the hang of training really quickly. And he is comedy gold, life is never boring anymore Grin

anotherdaynotanotherdollar · 08/11/2021 22:54

We have a 7 month old springer who is the opposite of what he should be. Virtually no recall, has forgotten all his training, paces the live long day even though he is exercised loads. won't fetch a ball etc.. He's just started chewing things he shouldn't and is generally a teenage thug.

Wouldn't be without him though.

wtfisthatspiderdoing · 08/11/2021 23:22

Lol @anotherdaynotanotherdollar 😆😆 I can totally relate.. survived to 6 months... thought had training cracked... recall was excellent... then the adolescence kicked in! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ hence why I now describe him as a hooligan 😆😆 he just seemed to forget all training over not and that perfect recall completely vanished! Im just waiting for him to turn into a normal dog... that will happen one day... won't it?!! Please say it will!! 🤣🤣

Peakypolly · 08/11/2021 23:30

My little thug is 6 months. He is managing to vault the bottom half of the stable door in our kitchen from the sitting position and has destroyed 7 door mats so far.
We adore him.

Ha ha he is so cute - that face how could you not love him.

I am liking the sound of the chaos!

We are picking up our springer pup this Saturday and this thread is not helping my wobbles! I keep going from being excited to thinking “what have we done??” First time dog owner nerves…

fitflopqueen · 09/11/2021 16:54

Mine removed the wadding from the kitchen sofa at about 6 months old - how we laughed Shock. Definite land shark.
Five years on she is ace, the most wonderful faithful companion. Good luck, love them.

madspringer · 09/11/2021 19:54

I have a 2.5 year old Springer who is the sweetest, gentlest and funniest thing ever! He has given us a wild ride though (I've posted on here a few times asking for help!), and he's been a challenge at points... Ours is working strain and I wish we'd really worked on calmness and disengagement whilst on walks from the start more than anything else. Despite being mad on walks he has always been calm and perfectly behaved at home though!

It has really helped me to just understand him as being mad as a hatter, and to just accept that he does everything at a million miles an hour - that's just him! Everybody we pass on a walk says "wow, hasn't he got a lot of energy" or some variation Grin he's brilliant and he has such a zest for life! I think mine is madder than most though, good luck with yours!

dustofneptune · 09/11/2021 20:17

You're going to have a blast.

I don't have a Springer, but do have a 1yr old working Cocker. Same idea, just as much crazy packed into a smaller body. ;)

Work on loose lead walking, recall, sit, wait, stay, leave it, drop it (oh how you'll need that), and SETTLE. You'll be golden.

tooearlytobeup · 09/11/2021 20:42

I have a 10 week old springer pup. Yes it’s crazy, but she is awesome! Springers want to please and this makes them so trainable. House training is virtually 100% now and has been since a few days in. She comes to her name and knows ‘sit’. Generally she has to be taken out once/ twice in the night for a wee bit then sleeps the rest. We have a few hours of bitey craziness a day, but the puppy snuggles the rest of the time more than make up for it.

I totally agree, having lost my amazing girl at the start of the year I am now the lucky owner of an 8 month old puppy and honestly, if you ignore the mad over stimulated biting phase (which has now passed thank goodness) she is the sweetest easiest, most biddable pup ever. Training has been a breeze. They are mad and hyper on walks but I'm not, she can tire herself out running rings around me if she needs to, but I just walk the walk I want and her obsession with being with me has made recall training so easy. They are muddy, a bit smelly, rather sensitive and a bit daft, but honestly, I would never have anything other than a Springer. They are just the best
EcoCustard · 09/11/2021 23:27

It’ll be fine Op! If you have Facebook have a look at my dog is a Twat page. It will give you an insight into spaniels Grin. I grew up with springers and they are the best, crazy, funny yet sweet and loyal dogs. I have working cockers now, and will be adding a springer hopefully next year. Be consistent, mentally stimulate as well as walks and play and be patient, and enjoy it.

Slobberstops · 10/11/2021 08:10

Ooh they all sound magnificent and very wonderful.

I will check out the test website😂

We are at 18 weeks with ours and I agree with everything Bellie99 says. We also have a 10 year old Springer who is never left alone and has now been awarded a sainthood. You can usually find puppy hanging off older dogs ears or tail.
Slipper boots saved my ankles at the land shark stage or you could try wellies Grin. I now also need to purchase more jumpers and pajama bottoms as these have been shredded by said land shark.
Wouldn't change them for the world Smile
