Constant tears

We have a gorgeous working cocker spaniel who is amazing. He’s 18 months old and around 6 months he started to have tears running down his face. We have used cooled boiled water, eye drops to rule out infection, piraton and then the vet gave us stuff that I thought was going to be new drops but dh picked it up without questioning and his just a solution to clean tear stains (which he doesn’t have as the liquid is completely clear). Is there anything we can do to prevent or reduce it? None of his siblings or his mum and dad have this so can’t go on other’s experience.

Can't see from the photo but is it always or just a bit you notice every day or so? Doesn't sound like the vet was bothered by it?
I notice it sometimes on ours but just thought it might be the wind or bouncing around in the grass!

Claudia84 it's pretty obvious in the photo.

Bless him, does it seem to bother him at all?

Mine has eye gunk a lot of the year but it is an allergy so piriton solves it.

However I sure when we first went the vet mentioned getting an eye specialist to have a good look to see if there was a problem with the eye lashes affecting him if it didn't clear up. I would be pushing for that in your situation.

It doesn’t bother him at all but he happily lets us wash them. He never has dry eyes but he shoves his face in hedges etc all the time.

Should add, it is clear liquid and not “gunk”. No colour on a white tissue.

Could it be the food causing it?
What does he eat?

We were advised by 2 vets and the woman in the pet shop to stick with very plain (royal canin) and find the right food and the tears dried up.

I'd leave it be then. Keep him clean but other than that I'd leave it alone, might cause more trouble giving him drops etc .

This needs a vet check again. There are a lot of reasons for excessive tears and they need to be ruled out. This is not normal tear production and does need to be looked into as it is an ongoing issue.

BbqFanatic · 09/11/2021 14:38

Looks like blocked tear ducts. Ask the vet to do dye test. They put green dye eye drops to see if it passes through nostrils or not. Sorry its layman terms, not vet speak

NeedAHoliday2021 · 09/11/2021 21:24

@BbqFanatic that’s what I was thinking so I’ll book him in.

He eats Luna and me raw patties and he’s very healthy so not keen to change. He was on different food previously and his eyes were the same.
