Joint supplements for dogs

My beautiful girl is starting to get a bit 'limpy' especially in the evenings, and I'm wondering whether she might have a bit of joint pain / mild arthritis.

There seem to be millions of joint supplements online, of various prices. Can anyone recommend something for me to try?

She's an 8 year old lab.

I give my 13 yr old malamute glucosamine, standard human tablets. Either Asda or online. Previously gave my huskies cod liver oil capsules. They work a treat but can cause loose stools. The glucosamine doesn't.

I used to give our old girl Yumove i think it was called. It made a difference for her.

Thank you, I will investigate.

My dog has Canine Joint Right , he’s been on it since he was 2/3 as he has bilateral luxating patella , it really suits him , he’s 11 and extremely fit .

Our neighbours give theirs canabis oil, it has visable helped their dogs mobility.

She says they are not seeing any negative side affects.

Tesco sell dog Glucosamine tablets in the pet aisle. About £3 for 90 tablets in a white tub with a blue lid. They are meaty flavoured.

The vet told me originally to just buy human ones, but she's happier to have the dog ones due to flavour.

I started mine on hemp oil from Pawsome Products. Has definitely made a difference and they've only been on it a couple of weeks.

My dog is like a different dog after taking YuMove. He has got his spring back.

Lanique · 08/11/2021 20:18

Thank you. I've ordered some YuMove to start with.

Interested in going down the CBD oil route too.

Thanks all.

I'll look out for some of these too - much cheaper than YuMove!

We use Riaflex plus Green Lipped Mussel and high strength Omega oil to support arthritic joints. I also use a turmeric tablet for dogs, but that’s not as well researched, although we noticed a definite improvement in our dog after a month on it.

Have a read of the Canine Arthritis Management website and their FB group, as there is a wealth of specialist knowledge and advice on there about management and support of dogs with arthritis/joint issues. I read all the info they had on supplements, then used that info to do further research and decide which supplements to try. We introduced each one individually and gave them at least a month before deciding whether they were helping or not. My dog was already on NSAIDs and Yumove, but moving him onto the Riaflex/Mussel/Omega Oil combo made a big difference. Weight management is also vital to take the strain off their joints.

I would also advise a vet appointment. First line treatment would probably be a simple anti-inflammatory, which won’t cost much, but may well make a big different to your dog’s comfort and mobility. Supplements alone won’t make enough of a difference unfortunately.
