Puppy food question

Our Labrador pup (18 weeks) has just recovered from a stomach infection and been in antibiotics abs probiotics for 3 days.

He was prescribed a diet of rice and chicken for the 3 days by the vet which will end tonight.

When I put him back on his original kibble, what would be a good food to mix it with?
Pre-infection I would use a tiny bit of Primula, grated cheese, grated carrot.
The vet recommended small amounts of chicken Chappie but I can't find it anywhere!

Would another brand of tinned good work well?

Kibble on its own just doesn't do it for him.

Haven't seen Chappie around for years!

I use Waitrose Own tins for both cat and dogs, it's better quality than nearly all the others.

FudgeFlake · 06/11/2021 14:38

Bits in jelly seems to be more popular than bits in gravy.

BaconAndAvocado · 06/11/2021 14:39

FudgeFlake yes, the vet said the gravy ones are too rich and could upset his stomach again.

Mix a little kibble with the chicken and rice, increase the amount of kibble gradually. If you know anyone who makes homemade kefir add a tiny bit to the food.

Raw feed. It's fantastic.

BaconAndAvocado · 06/11/2021 14:47

Sorry to sound thick but what is raw feed?

OP posts:
VsgKitt · 06/11/2021 15:06

Feeding raw meat. I get my dogs Bella and duke or prodog raw. Absolutely thriving 9n it, especially my dog with digestive issues and allergies.

BaconAndAvocado · 06/11/2021 15:11

Oh!
Just a piece of raw meat?
E.g. chicken breast?

@BaconAndAvocado

Oh! Just a piece of raw meat? E.g. chicken breast?
It's more complicated than that.

But you can do home made raw feeding but you have to make sure everything is nutritionally balanced with offal and bone content so I prefer the ready made packs from companies that come in 500g packets.

For my 2 small dogs (around 10kgs each) I use one 500g pack a day between them.

BaconAndAvocado · 06/11/2021 15:15

What brand do you recommend?

@BaconAndAvocado ASDA do the chappie chicken 😊

Mindymomo · 10/11/2021 07:11

I fed my puppy Butchers tinned wet food mixed with dry, I also fed tinned Step Up wet food from Pets at Home. He had sickness and diarrhoea once, I fed chicken and rice with a spoonful of plain tinned pumpkin for 5 days. My boy doesn’t like just dry food, so I have to mix wet food with it.

Raw feeding is exactly that, everything raw. It needs to be properly balanced and unless you do it yourself you will have to have quite a big freezer to store food.

Got some Chappie from Waitrose and I’ve been using a tin a day mixed in with his usual kibble.
He loves it and his poos are much firmer 👍🏻

I thought this was my post until I checked your name out op. My Labrador pup has had bouts of diarrhoea and several visits to the vets. He's had two lots of antibiotics and 1 of anti inflammatories and he was put on hills Zd prescription diet, which has hydrolysed chicken - it's much easier for their stomach to digest. He also had probiotics paste - prokolin- it's cheaper to buy at a pharmacy than the vets.

After last bout the vet took bloods and a stool sample - all came back clear. We are gradually reintroducing him to his previous food eg 75: 25 and 50: 50 then 25 :75. He gets no extras, he only gets his kibble as treats and no extra bits mixed into his kibble

Chappie was recommended to us but for now we're taking it carefully and keeping him more or less to his dry kibble

Our lab is 7 months now and seems much better - he's put on weight, his coat is thick and glossy and he seems a much happier boy. I think perhaps his digestive system needed time to mature - or maybe he's got a sensitive stomach

We try out little extras now like some sardines or egg and we go by the quality of his poos (sad, I know!!) we check it for solidity, if it's soft or sloppy if we're are concerned we'll try to work out what he's eaten that could have caused it and ease up on that. We try but can't always stop him picking things up on his walks though.

We keep some probiotics paste in our doggy first aid cupboard just in case.

As an alternative to raw feeding, feeding fresh is another option. I didn't like the idea of raw meat potentially being spread around my house so I use Butternut Box for my dog. You can adjust the amounts based on the dogs weight and activity levels and it all comes pre-weighed.

I have a discount code if you'd like to use it, my dog absolutely loves it.

Imdoingitnow
Glad to hear your pup is doing well now.

I've just started my pup on a mixture of his kibble and 1/3 tin of Chappie 3 times a day.
He's had this for the past 3 days and the poos have definitely improved- much firmer 👍🏻

@BaconAndAvocado that's great to hear. It's really worrying when your pup isn't right in himself. 👍
