Scared into paralysis??

So Ddog is a bastard for barking at hedgehogs. I'd let him in the garden for his last wee last night and of course there was a hedgehog.
He started going berserk so I went over with the torch.
Just before I got to him, he starts screaming and writhing on the ground. I go to pick him up and he scoots towards the house only using his front legs and dragging his back legs behind him on the floor, he tried to get up the step but couldn't manage and keeled over.
I picked him up and checked him over - no visible wounds but his heart was beating out of his chest.
I put him down and he buckled a bit then started walking unsteadily.
He seems fine this morning and I feel awful that I've had to come to work and leave him.
He's a 7 yr old terrier cross, usually very fit and healthy but a bit of a drama llama.
Does anyone know if a dog can literally be scared into paralysis?
Tia

That sounds more like a fit than being scared. If it happens again I would get a vet check.

icedcoffees · 05/11/2021 15:30

Are you sure he didn't get a spike in him?

NuckingFightmare · 05/11/2021 16:21

Pretty sure, no spines sticking out of him and no blood.
Ds just rang, he's had dog for a walk, says he's limping very slightly and can't jump.

Why aren't you taking him to the vet?

No one can diagnose him on here ...

Poor thing

Returnoftheowl · 05/11/2021 19:07

Has he been checked by a vet yet?

Chunkymenrock · 05/11/2021 19:14

More likely to be a back pain/problem I'd say. Poor little one.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 05/11/2021 19:15

Sounds like our puppy's first seizure, he was diagnosed with epilepsy I'm afraid. He's a happy and content dog but on medication for life. Get him checked out asap.

Brownlongearedbat · 05/11/2021 19:21

He needs an mri scan. It sounds like his spinal cord is compromised in some way and the excitement of barking etc led to him losing the use of his legs. If that happened to my dog he would have been taken to the vet immediately as an emergency.

AmberLynn1536 · 05/11/2021 19:26

Could be a heart problem if he passed out and was vocalising, similar happened to my dog and It was mitral valve disease. He needs to be seen by a vet ASAP.

FeatheredHope · 05/11/2021 19:26

It’s a day later and rather than see or speak to a vet, you post on Mumsnet?!

NewLifePending · 05/11/2021 19:27

Agree your dog needs a vet and not an Internet forum. Poor dog, I hope he’s ok

ErrolTheDragon · 05/11/2021 19:29

It could be something spinal - really would be worth getting him checked out.

BigSigh2021 · 05/11/2021 19:29

I'm a vet. It does sound like a spinal issue - slipped disc/fibrocartilagenous embolism being most likely in a youngish dog. Get him checked by a vet and don't let him run about/go up and down stairs/ jump on furniture in meantime.

NuckingFightmare · 05/11/2021 20:45

I will be taking him to the vet, I was asking for opinions or info until then. I left for work at 8.30 this morning and have literally just walked through the door

Let us know how he gets on at the emergency vet tonight

Hope that's where you've taken him...

BigSigh2021 · 05/11/2021 22:02

I wouldn’t worry about an emergency vet tonight, as you say he is walking around, as long as he doesn’t seem too painful. Keep him fully rested, and see a vet tomorrow.

NuckingFightmare · 05/11/2021 22:30

Thank you @BigSigh2021 he doesn't seem to be in any pain at all, I'll be ringing our vet first thing in the morning.
