Another insurance one... best insurance to start a senior dog on?

7 year old dog, healthy as a bean, no pre-existing and looking to start insuring as recently adopted. Petplan quote for most basic plan (only 4k cover per year) is £930 a year/£85 a month. I was expecting insurance to be high, but not 1.5k per year for the level of cover I want (12k)! Is this the normal amount of extortion expenditure, or any recommendations, please? Thank you.

You would be far better of setting up your own "dog account" and put in money every month.Insurances, like any other business makes a profit and you pay for their profit. If you can afford every month £60 for your "dog accou t" you will be covered for illness.I have done this since ever I had dogs(last 30 years) and it has served me very well.the only thing is,you need to have self disciplineSmile.

My oldie is with Petplan and they've always been good and vet & specialists happy to direct claim and so I've only excess to pay. I think when she was 6yr it was about £35 and at 15yr its £75. She had stem cell treatment so along with usual arthritis meds £70pm supplement £25pm, and physio sessions and other claims it's pretty much maxed out 7k cover past 2 yrs.

Bought by many has good reputation and very reasonable for cover levels but I don't know how pans out long term for seniors, petplan has been in market long time. When I took out Halifax & axa decided to drop out of market & m&s changed underwriter so many people were left having to take up more expensive policy or left with now uninsurable pre-existing conditions, so long term stability was very important to me.

People think with oldies they'll not put through surgery so not worth it but the costs of diagnostics, hospitalisation or just medications can be high and even with common arthritis is lots can do to give good quality life but it all comes at a cost so it's been great to be able to access those options.

It's all a gamble may never have to visit vet or unlucky and multiple big bills, I tend to think how much it would cost me to borrow it and it's one type of insurance your highly likely to claim on unlike buildings cover.
