Why does my dog smell like a musty mushroom?

My dog aged 2 goes to the groomers every 6 weeks and normally has a bath in-between as well as paws showered after being in mud. He's increasingly smelling musty , like a mushroomy smell. Thankfully he's off to the groomers tomorrow. But I can't figure out what's caused it. Any ideas?

Most likely a fungal infection somewhere- sniff his ears or between his paws- are they stinky?

BurnedToast · 02/11/2021 22:05

Just had a sniff , I can't locate the smell from anywhere in particular. He just stinks.

Our Cockapoo is smelly. She is groomed regularly, all the necessary bits kept cleaned but she honks.

I've decided some dogs are just a bit more pungent than others

BurnedToast · 02/11/2021 22:21

He's a cockapoo, but has never smelt this bad. I wonder if it's because he's got wet on a few walks recently.

Fox poo is our dog's favourite perfume. It is a very strong disgusting smell and he prides on being able to locate fox poo 💩 absolutely anywhere we go (usually as soon as he comes out if the groomers smelling of actual perfume). Could it be fox poo?

BurnedToast · 03/11/2021 06:13

He definitely hasn't rolled in fox poo as all our recent walks have been on the lead and walking in town due to the park being wet. Although we do get foxes in the garden , so perhaps. I can't locate the source of the whiff when I sniff him. He just honks. Could it be anal glands ?

Try looking in his mouth. Our cocker stank. It took years to work out it was the folds in his mouth festering.

I've never bathed my dogs. Feels a bit unnatural to me. Just get a dip in the river if muddy. (unhelpful)

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 03/11/2021 07:17

What breed do you have @Words? Cockapoos need cutting (and therefore bathing) as very often they don't shed their fur.

romdowa · 03/11/2021 07:23

I agree it could be a fungal thing with their skin. Doesn't matter how frequent they are being washed. Plus a lot of groomers use products that are terrible for their skin. Might be worth taking ddog to the vet

Quickchangeartiste · 03/11/2021 07:24

How is his skin? It does sound fungal.
To be honest that sounds like a lot of bathing if he’s getting a bath between 6 week grooming - maybe too much shampoo used on his skin?
If your insurance company has a call line give them a call and they may be able suggest what may be causing it.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 03/11/2021 07:32

Check for hotspots and ears.

Also, teeth ok?

Changed to a new food recently?

They do need cutting but they don't need to have loads of grooming products used on them.

Over-washing can cause problems with w dogs skin and cause dryness and other problems.

A rinse off with the hose is all most dogs need, and then stick them in a drying coat to get them dry afterwards.

I've had mongrels and collies over the years. Some of them have had quite silky coats. It never occurred to me to bath them, ever.

Ridingthegravytrain · 03/11/2021 07:38

Maybe try bathing in malaseb shampoo. Think you need to get from the vet

Tomatobear · 03/11/2021 07:40

It sounds like a yeast infection. It's a very obvious smell. I'm not sure how it's treated though. My mum's dog always stank because of it, but she never managed to clear it!

Bebeschitt · 03/11/2021 10:03

I do wonder about all the shampoos stuff used on dogs now. I'm not sure it's totally right. I mean, surely it upsets their sense of smell too?
My dog gets a bath if she absolutely needs it but mostly it's a wipe over with a wet cloth or a hose in the summer. She isn't a breed that requires preening though.
I agree with PP's. Vets. Sounds like a fungal or yeast infection. Anal glands is less mushroomy and more fishy (and a bit bloody. Yum)

Pumpkinsonparade · 03/11/2021 10:07

Because he is a fungi?

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 03/11/2021 10:59

Musty is fungal.

Rancid can be arthritis or pancreas and liver.

BurnedToast · 03/11/2021 20:01

Thank you. He smells lovely after the groomers so I will see how he is in a few days.
