Tell me about your dog's daily routine

I've just got a lovely rescue pup who's almost 6 months old. She's a bit underweight so I've been feeding her little and often but I'm aware I should probably get her into three square meals a day. She's also come to me with no toilet training whatsoever so I'm doing the "take her out every couple of hours" thing which is at least avoiding accidents in the house. But is like to get into a routine of just going when we have our regular walks.

So please, everyone, what's your daily routine?

For our medium sized pooch his routine is as follows:

Get up at 7 and let him out for a wee in the garden.

8:30 a quick lap round the block (15 mins) for a sniffy walk, he sees lots of other dogs on that walk, after that he normally eats a small breakfast.

He then snoozes next to me whilst I work all morning and occasionally goes upstairs to look out of the windows (where we live there's always dogs walking by)

Lunchtime I normally take him on a 40 min brisk walk to properly tire him out. Then back and he snoozes whilst I work for the rest of the afternoon.

5:30 we go for another 15 min lap and he comes back and has his tea.

After that he normally wants about 30 mins of playtime and then he loafs around for the rest of the evening with the family. He likes to sit on the sofa with us and watch telly.

10:30 ish he's let out for a bedtime wee and has a bedtime biscuit. Then he happily sleeps through to 7am.

It wasn't until lockdown that we managed to get him into a proper routine but now he's a lot more settled as a result.

TerrorPup is nearly 14 months old but our general weekday non-daycare day routine is:
7am - up, garden for toileting, breakfast, cuddles on sofa.
7.30 - walk, usually around an hour
She will then typically snoozing until 12.30, if I know I am in calls towards the end of that I make a point to let her out mid morning as she sometimes starts asking.
12.30 Training whilst I make and eat lunch
13.00 Playtime in the garden
13.30 She settles down with a Kong. Again Will let her out midafternoon if I know I will be on calls, if not will let her guide me.
17.30 Usually starts her witching hour. Depending on weather we may go for a walk, do some training or play.
19.00 we cook our dinner, encouraging her to stay on a mat. She eats around 20.00 vvia some kind of interactive feeder.

I would say ours has a bit of a control issue with her wees, she definitely does ask to go out but generally by the time she asks it is quite urgent so we are still mindful to let her out in advance of being on calls etc.

On daycare days (twice a week) we get up later, she's dropped off after breakfast and we pick up at 5ish. She then sleeps most of the evening.

On weekends we also get up later, have a long morning walk, usually a cafe lunch, then again she's pretty snoozy for the rest of the day.

Congratulations on your new addition. My terrier pup is 10 months old. General routine is as follows, but it can change depending on weather forecast, family activities or outings:
6.30am wee in garden, followed by breakfast
8am slow sniffy lead walk around the block (this is usually poo time)
8.30am naps on and off all morning, sometimes we go in the garden for a play.
1pm I have lunch and usually give the dog something to keep him occupied while I eat - chopped cucumber in his snuffle mat or a hairy rabbit ear.
2pm Longer off lead walk, usually incorporate some training and some of his evening food allowance here (another poo)
More naps in the afternoon.
5.30pm starts to get a bit impatient for his food so we do a bit of play/training.
6.30pm Family supper time and dog has rest of his daily food allowance.
7pm Garden wee then (hopefully) settle down to watch TV. Sometimes he has a pig's ear, yak chew or pizzle stick.
He goes out for a final walk around the block at some point during the evening (does a poo).
10.30pm wee in garden and bed with a small biscuit.
Hope that helps.

Potpourri23 · 29/10/2021 11:57

Thanks all, this is really helpful. I'm also trying to find ways to keep her occupied while I'm working.... She has lots of chew toys but only wants the things she can't have eg shoes, pens etc 🤣

Mine get let outside at 7am, then a long walk soon after (about 45 mins) then fed. They come to work with me until around 4pm, with a few toilet breaks and fussing from other staff/customers. We then do a 30 mins or so walk as soon as we get home, then they have their tea and spend the evening snoozing in front of the radiator. I've got an 8.5 yr old working cocker, and a 3 yr old sprocker. They're mad as hatters on walks but really calm the rest of the time thankfully.

Andwander · 29/10/2021 12:30

That age,she needs to go out every 2 hours.in regards to routine, its best you establish a routine that suits you( your dog will adapt to your routine),but dont forget the 2 hours wee time. For my 2 border collies(one hear old and 4 year old) I walk at least 2,5 hours a day with extra ball games in the park ca.20 min. They are tired in the evening and happily snooze in their baskets.Neved had a hyper dog

icedcoffees · 29/10/2021 13:04

My beagle is four. His routine is as follows:

Up with DH at 6am when he gets up for work. He gets some biscuits and goes out to the toilet.
Back up to bed at 7am until I get up, which is anywhere between 7.30-8.30am.
Chills for an hour while I get up/sorted, then he has an hour or so's walk with 1-2 other dogs (I'm a dog walker so take him with me).
Then he goes to my in-laws while I work. He sleeps, has a chew and curls up by the fire all day.
I pick him up around 2-3pm, he has dinner and goes back to sleep until DH gets home around 5pm.
Then he's awake for a while - pottering around, following us to see if he can scrounge some food Grin
He snoozes on the sofa from around 7pm, out for last wee at 10.30pm then up to bed.

BridgeFarmKefir · 29/10/2021 13:40

We have a 5 month old WCS.

7am wake and go out for pee, then breakfast (he pesters me until I serve up). This is a relatively new thing - he was waking at 5.30 and needing a 2am wee but suddenly everything clicked. We are very grateful!
7.30am: 30 min walk, which is usually a trip to the park to play and practice some training
8am -12ish he snoozes and dicks about the house. I play with him a bit between calls and if he's being needy (a regular occurrence) I'll give him a cuddle and let him sleep on me.
12ish I have my lunch and he gets something to distract him - Kong, dried animal part
Sometimes one of us will take him for another short walk.
More snoozing/ dicking about.
6pm dinner, then a 30-40 min walk. Later walks are a pain now it's darker but they do help avoid/ reduce the evening zoomies
7-10.30 he hangs out with us. Usually gets a lickimat while we make dinner. Sometimes he just snoozes, sometimes he's a massive pain in the butt Grin
10.30ish: bedtime pee

Re: toileting, I'm still taking him whenever he wakes up from a nap, looks antsy, or it's been a while. He is getting better at telling me but he's not entirely reliable!

Floralnomad · 29/10/2021 13:48

We don’t have a routine as I find that it’s easier not to , the only thing that is actually routine is breakfast between 8:30- 9:30 and dinner between 4:30-5:30 . With walks etc it varies depending on whether we are taking the dog out or whether I’m in and just using the local field . I find that if he always expects to go out 30 minutes after breakfast that he then pesters if that doesn’t happen . Generally speaking if he’s indoors he’s either asleep , chewing or playing with his toys . He does have a bedtime routine which is out for a wee at 10ish , biscuit, then upstairs on our bed watching tv until midnight when he gets carried to his own bedroom . When I’m away he does the wee and biscuit but then takes himself straight into his own room as he knows that my husband will probably fall asleep and forget to move him .

Mirrorxx · 29/10/2021 13:49

Our puppy is 10 months old and on non day care days his routine is
Get up and garden wee 7am
Nap 7.30-9
Breakfast 9
Nap 9.30
Play 11
Walk 12 for half hour
Usually a kong when we get back
Nap or play in garden with neighbours dog until 3.30 ish
Walk for hour at 4
Dinner 6.30
Short walk for 20 mins 7.30
Wee then he gets into bed at around 9pm

Doboopedoo · 29/10/2021 21:11

I agree with @floralnomad, sometimes not having a strict routine each day works best as they can the be unimpressed (and give The Stare) if their desired activity doesn’t happen at that time!

We have a year old lab, general routine is

7.30 - up with the rest of the house during the week, so means she gets up at this time at weekend too Sad
731 - start begging for breakfast and following humans about until they make breakfast
735 - possibly a pee and poo in the garden, possibly not. Held it in until 12 today as it was raining heavily, despite constant opening the door for her.
Mornings are general mooch about, cuddle the humans, follow everyone into the kitchen in case there’s food for her, play with toys. Dog Walker a couple of days a week. We WFH and walk her at lunchtime if hasn’t been with dog Walker,
She knows the difference between weekdays and weekends as DC don’t go to school and gets very excited at Saturday walk adventure. Start begging for this about 9am.
Afternoon much more of same - bit of training in between work calls, play with toys, get a chew or a Kong. Anytime the doorbell goes, runs to the back door in case a favourite human is coming home.
We do either a long walk before dinner, or in the evening, depending on what time works best for everyone.
6pm - dinner. Start mooching for this at 545 with The Stare.
After dinner snooze while we do bedtime for DC.
Evenings are general playtime, cuddles with humans, etc. Has a dental chew about 9.
10pm - out for a pee. Refuse point blank if have peed after dinner or if it’s raining.
10ish - off to crate for bedtime, stare at us from crate until we go to bed.

We found that ability to hold pee/poo massively improved in last few months (see above pee refusal) so it will come, their bladders get stronger!
I do like seeing peoples doggy routines too 🤣

nannybeach · 29/10/2021 21:33

Have had dogs since I was a kid
The only time I had a strict routine, was once when I had a dog who wouldn't pee or poo in our garden. I took her out at 6.30 before going to work, when I came home, after dinner and late night.weve had dog flap for 25 years. Always had 2 dogs so they have company, and we can go out without them. One is a 15 year old toy, the other 6 year old border collie. They like breakfast at 7, take them selves out before and after. We have a large garden, they have Kong's, balls, normally apart from this an average of an hour's run off the leads,we live near the beach, south downs, sometimes it's 3 hours up there. If we're gardening, they're put there with us,will bring you a ball to throw. House training I took them out hourly, but drew the line at getting up in the night,as is recommended

dustofneptune · 29/10/2021 22:07

Congratulations on your new puppy dog! :D

I keep NeptuneDog's routine pretty flexible, but he usually gets fed around the same time each day, which tends to make his toilet needs reasonably predictable/regular.

Food
around 9am + 5pm

Pee breaks
Around five of these per day
Roughly 7am, midday, afternoon, evening, 10pm

We don't have a garden, so these take about 10mins each time, on lead

Walkies
Either around 8am or some time in the afternoon.

He gets ~30min off lead, running around, chasing balls, bit of scent work, training, etc.
We used to walk him twice a day, but he became too boisterous.

NeptuneDog always needs toilet breaks regardless of walks, to be honest. Even when we walked him twice a day, he still asked to go out every few hours-ish.

Good luck and have fun with your new puppo!

Juanbablo · 03/11/2021 02:45

2 year old JRT.
Gets up whenever we do, anywhere between 5 and 7. Leaves his bed and gets on the sofa (doesn't like mornings)

Is eventually awake enough to either go out in the garden to the toilet or a trot round the block.

Rarely eats breakfast despite being offered it.

Goes off to the office with dh, or stays at home and I come home at lunch to walk him.

Plays with children when they come home from school, has an off lead run around 4 or 5.

Might eat his dinner around 6-8pm if he feels like he's had enough days of living off fresh air. He's a healthy weight but not sure how!

Terrorises his toys for an hour in the evening,
goes out to the toilet around 9. Sleeps all night.

6.30/7 up and our for a pee
7.30/8.30 out for 35 min walk
Slice of toast when we get back
Then loafs about while I work I'll let he leave out when I'm up from my desk. She has a bobalot and various chews and a likimat.
Lunch is a tin of food
More sleeping in the afternoon
When DS get home he plays with her and we're trying to get into a routine of a night walk too - just a short one.
She has kibble available all day.
Final pee about 10 and then she gets some treats for bedtime.

Potpourri23 · 12/11/2021 13:18

Thanks so much all!

OP posts:
LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 12/11/2021 13:50

7-8 wee in garden then kibble

8.30-9.30 30 min walk then beloved dentastix (we hide this and she has to sniff it out... we started with a "sit" and a quick hide... then built up to "sit" and "stay" and more elaborate hiding places. She loves this and it challenges/tires her out)
9-12 Dog naps and potters
12-1 wee in garden lunch and a bit of play
3-4 wee in garden
6 wee in garden and dinner
7-9 tv and a bit of playing, maybe a walk and another garden wee.
10-11 Bedtime wee and bedtime Biscuit signal the end of the day! (She LOVES the biscuit)
I really recommend bedtime biscuit. My mum did it with her rescue too and it really helped set the routine.
