Hi all,

My DH and I are adopting a puppy via the rspca. We have one make dog already who is not neutered, do the rspca check if they are neutered already? As I read they they don't re home same species that arent neutered but wanted to check how/if they do this?

Thanks
LJ

If you have a dog I would expect them to want to meet your existing dog to see how they get on. Is your existing a male or female?

LillyJ95 · 28/10/2021 10:00

Our existing dog is male.

The dog we are adopting is also male and will be 8 weeks when we bring him home.

I would expect the RSPCA to have already arrange meets with the two dogs and discussed potential issues with having two unneutered male dogs in the home. They may request for the RSPCA puppy to be neutered when old enough anyway, rescues often have this written into contracts. Age will depend on breeds.

They will soon see your existing dog isn’t neutered then. They will want to meet him.

LillyJ95 · 28/10/2021 10:46

Our dog cannot meet the puppy as its only 14 days old.

We are only in contact with the foster parent as the canter they came from is 2 hours away!

You'll need to get in contact with the centre the fosterer is fostering for ASAP. A fosterer cannot promise pups to people as they don't belong to them, all the paperwork will be via the centre, who may already have a puppy waiting list and have all the puppies spoken for when they're ready to go.

The fostered confirmed that she is in charge of allocating homes first and works closely with the rspca person.

The puppies were part of a big raid so had to be sent to so many different foster homes around the uk this one is over 2 hours from us!

The puppy will come with a neutering contract, so it will need to be neutered at an appropriate age.
Is there a reason your older dog isn't neutered? If, for example, there is a medical reason or you delaying neutering until maturity due to being a v large breed / because of a nervous disposition, you might be able to ask your vet for a letter stating this?
I would be careful introducing another unneutered male, in case you run into problems when he hits adolescence.

Ylvamoon · 28/10/2021 12:58

Personally I would not neuter the existing dog unless absolutely necessary. I don't think any rescue should make this decision for you.

You are going to have 2 male dogs so you should be fine as long as there are not any entire girls around.

SillyLittleBiscuit · 28/10/2021 13:05

We had to have a home visit and visit our dog several times at the centre when rescuing via the RSPCA. They'll definitely ask about other pets and their circumstances.

LillyJ95 · 28/10/2021 13:12

We aren't neutering our dog because there's no medical need the vet advised us not to. He is a perfect weight and lovely termpermant and is 7 years old.

We used to have another dog who died suddenly at aged 5 due to a heart murmur. He also wasn't neutered so we are not fearful of having another non neutered male.

We just hope the rspca won't say we can't adopt him unless ours is to be neutered.

They should allow the dogs to meet before the pup comes home. Contact the centre before you get your heart set on this pup. If they want your existing dog neutered I wouldn’t proceed. Plus the puppy will likely have to be neutered because it’ll be in their contract.

Has any of the information come from the RSPCA?
