Any ways to make life easier for him with a cone on?

My poor boy has been neutered this week and now has a cone round his neck. Obviously he hates it especially since he can't chew his treats or use his kong or anything with the cone in the way.

I did manage to make up his puzzle and elevated it to make it easier for him.

It doesn't help that he has a super long one on because he could still reach his wound with the original one the vet used.

Any tips? I feel so bad for him.

Did your vet have the alternative of a romper suit? I don't know how else to describe it - it must have a proper name, but it's a light, cotton, close fitting jacket that covers the operated on area. You have to remove for them to go to the loo, but my bitch had one when she was spayed and it was a godsend, especially as she is used to wearing close fitting jumpers.

If he is chewing a kong and is being supervised can you take the cone off?

I take them off when with them or walking them as I can intervene if they start to attack the wound. (Although there is always one dog who had his on a lot despite being supervised - looking at you collie in the corner!)

I prefer a onesie as although you need to take them off for toileting, they don't get in the way. You can get them on Amazon, though if they are a small dog you can adapt a baby bodysuit

We can't risk taking it off he has always been...fond....or licking that area anyway lol he is trying to lick it even with the cone on so I know as soon as its off he will be at it!

I will look into a suit, I had thought they only worked for female dogs.

It would definitely help him if you posted photos here for us 😁

Seriously I’m sure I saw an inflatable ring alternative somewhere that stops the moving their neck to kick but leaves them able to chew treats and toys.

If he's trying to lick it with the cone on, then an inflatable ring or bodysuit are likely to be totally ineffective. Just tough it out.

LadyCleathStuart · 27/10/2021 19:55

Yeah think probably just have to tough it out. It's hard he is a super high energy dog and can't walk too far for now, can't jump about and now can't even do his enrichment stuff. He is quite calm now because still on pain meds but he is going to be climbing the walls in a few days.

Talk to your vet about some calming meds.

Could he not have one of these:

www.amazon.co.uk/Thrive-Inflatable-Collar-Surgical-Protection/dp/B003XLGX22/ref=asc_df_B003XLGX22/?hvlocphy=9045022&linkCode=df0&hvptwo&hvnetw=g&hvadid=309819532054&hvpone&hvlocint&th=1&hvpos&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl&hvqmt&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&hvtargid=pla-564287837508&hvrand=10708579631638187996

My dog had this when he was neutered and when he had a drain in his shoulder. Much more comfy for them and they can’t reach banned areas Smile
