Dew claw removal in adult dog?

3 year old keeps catching her dew claw, it keeps bleeding. can’t get near it to have a look. She’s going in for an op in a couple of weeks and was wondering if it can be removed whilst she’s under?

Having had a dog rip off a dew claw I would definitely ask for them to be removed (back legs only). The bloodbath and trauma to the dog were awful when it happened.

Ask. I had one of my dogs back ones removed when she had to go under. After many many times of catching, bleeding and the odd infection.

Best thing I did!

Thank you for your replies. I wasn’t sure if I’d get slammed for suggesting it
I asked the vet and she said as long as it’s not attached then it should be fine. If it it attached then they wouldn’t do it as it’s the same as removing a thumb, which it fair enough. I’m glad I asked

I've seen a report written by an orthopedic vet who identified problems in the longer term for dogs that had had their dew claws removed - not every dog - but many more of them ended up with arthritis and other long-term pain conditions compared to dogs that retained their dew claws. You can get special wraps to put around their legs around their dew claws to protect them as an alternative.
