Hi I'm desperately in need of some advice . We have had our golden retriever boy for 5 months and ever since we got him he has always had issues with his stomach. He would probably have it 4/5 times a month . He has now has it 5 days and also being sick white Thoth. I don't want to go to the vets right now as they only say the usual , chicken, rice if he's drinking ect he will be fine and then give me some paste which they charge 68 pound for but you can order it online for 9 😴 which we have done this morning .
I'm after any advice or suggestions on managing this and also if any one has any home remedies that can help him too . I love my boy more than anything and seeing him like this all the time is breaking my heart . I have lost so much money because I'm phoning in sick when he's like this because I don't want him to be on his own lol . Thankyou

Goldens are well known for having food intolerances. Several I know do well on a fish based diet but can't tolerate anything with chicken or wheat. What does the breeder suggest?

I have a Golden Retriever and we have had several incidences of stomach upsets. The worst was when she was accidentally given 2 pigs ears as treats in 1 day. DH had to hose the patio down at 3 am Grin

She's fed kibble + fresh toppings (apple/tuna/carrot/chicken) + a little salmon oil. We have found the plainest kibble suits her best so we use Skinners which is intended for working dogs and Royal Canin (less nutritious but she loves it), Bella and Bounce treats, dried sprats and an occasional raw egg.

She has had fancier kibbles but every time has led to an upset stomach so back we go to the plainer stuff. When she's had an upset tummy she gets boiled rice and shredded chicken (she loves it) for 24-48 hours then kibble only for 24-48 hours.

I've just seen the bit about vomiting white froth. That doesn't sound right at all. Can you get a second opinion from another vet? Is it mainly vomiting or diarrhea?

Is there any way he could have ingested something? An object or something poisonous? Does he swim in water? I ask this because a local stream became contaminated and 2 dogs died. I'm not trying to scare you (and I hope I haven't), just suggesting things to investigate or eliminate.

My gr had the most terrible stomach. Has he been eating grass? They eat grass if they have a tummy ache as a kind of emetic and that can be frothy.

As for food, I worked out that my dog could only eat Harrington’s with a wet pouch on top. Fancier food caused him awful diarrhoea. I was full of good intentions in his early months and tried bespoke food and posh makes, but they gave him the runs and one (I think it was Burns) he vomited back up. Also treats such as ears (ugggh) and liver treats etc can play up a dog’s stomach.

If it continues I might suggest asking vet for a stomach x-ray (hope you’re insured!) My dog was poorly once on Christmas Eve and eventually out snaked a roll of wrapping paper (almost intact!) . The x-ray showed one Christmas bauble (raffia luckily), two socks and “a quantity of bits and bobs”.

Our 6 month old black lab has trouble with diarrhoea etc my nephew has a golden retriever which used to have once or twice a week and he had trouble with his digestion too.

My lab puppy is on hills prescription zd as he seems to have difficulty with digesting protein. - it's not cheap but it works for him at present. The vet had taken some bloods and a stool sample as he had a flare up over the weekend, so we're waiting for the results and might then have an idea of what's causing it and have a plan

My nephew's golden retriever seems to get irritated by treats and especially pigs ears - He was put on collards - it looked a bit like luncheon meats in a tray but it really helped him. Now he's 1 year and on tails

I can't really help with what you can give your dog as I tried all sorts of foods to no avail. Chappie is bland and helps with sensitive stomach, tuna, chicken rice pasta scrambled egg white fish.

Good luck

If you're not already a member, check out Golden Retrievers UK Advice and Discussion Forum on Facebook and / or the local Facebook group for your region. Lots of advice re food for goldies to settle poorly tums on there.
I use boiled chicken and rice only for 48 hours and then start phasing in his normal kibble substituting one heaped spoonful of rice for one small handful of kibble and cutting down the amount of chicken too (he normally has a little bit of chopped chicken on his kibble when tummy is ok). Others suggest white fish and rice, white fish and mashed potato (no dairy or seasoning), mashed sweet potato and veg.
If you have a five month old pup with recurrent tummy issues then I'd go back to vet, discuss with them and at least have him weighed to make sure he's not losing weight.
